a message from Robby Mook, DCCC Exec Director

Here we go again.

As if their radical plan to end Medicare wasn’t reckless enough, House Republicans are now setting their sights on something even more extreme: privatizing Social Security. Democrats will never stop fighting to protect our seniors.

We’ve got it all covered in this special edition of @Stake — including how you can join the fight to stop this radical plan in its tracks.

GOP’s Social Security Privatization 2.0

Republicans are rolling out another plan to “privatize” and end Social Security as we know it, turning seniors’ guaranteed benefits into a guaranteed gamble. The last time they tried this was 2005. Just think, if they succeeded then, seniors would have lost trillions more in the 2008 financial crash.

We protected Social Security then. Let’s stand together to protect it again now.

Help us get 100,000 signatures for our petition calling on House Republicans to drop their reckless plan to end Social Security as we know it. Add your name and then spread it far and wide to your friends and family.  http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca53/1b9dd8ab/48532523/4e0cee63/3102684656/VEsE/

Video Update: Protecting Medicare in Your Own Words

Ever since Republicans began their radical push to end Medicare for America’s seniors, while giving more tax breaks to America’s billionaires, we’ve been holding them accountable.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our powerful video of real Americans telling their own personal stories of how they rely on Medicare benefits — then sign our petition telling Republicans to drop their disgraceful demands to end Medicare.  http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca53/1b9dd8ab/48532523/4e0cee63/3102684656/VEsE/

Tea Party Launches “Super PAC

Want to see something really scary? This week, the Tea Party’s biggest Washington, DC lobbying group ripped a page out of Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers’ playbooks by forming a “Super PAC” that can spend unlimited amounts of secret money attacking Democrats.

This has raised the stakes for the upcoming June 30th Federal Election Commission (FEC) fundraising deadline. Your grassroots dollars are needed now more than ever to prepare our Rapid Response campaign, launch targeted ads, mobilize volunteers to attend town hall meetings and more.

Contribute today so we can compete with the coming onslaught of the Tea Party’s new Koch Brothers-like Super PAC.   http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca53/1b9dd8ab/48532523/4e0cee62/3102684656/VEsC/

With our campaign to take back the House heating up faster than the temperature outside, stay tuned for the next edition of @ stake for all the latest news from the trail.

1. PETITION: Tell Republicans to abandon their plans to privatize Social Security

2. Goal: 100,000 strong supporting the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

3. Contribute today to fight back against the new Koch brothers-like SuperPAC

Thanks again for your tremendous support.

Questions For The GOP Field At Tonight’s Debate

Questions For The GOP Field At Tonight’s Debate

Jun 13, 2011 | By Alex Seitz-Wald

Tonight, Republican presidential hopefuls will gather in New Hampshire for the first real debate of the 2012 election. The CNN/WMUR/Union Leader-sponsored event will help introduce the seven candidates to the country and offer the first chance for the field’s top candidates to go head to head, as the front-runners skipped May’s presidential forum in South Carolina. While much remains to be learned about these candidates, here are the questions we’re hoping they each get asked tonight:

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: You’ve positioned yourself as a leader on job creation, releasing a web video today attacking President Obama on the bleak jobs picture. But while you were governor, Massachusetts was ranked 47th on job creation. While you were at Bain, the company slashed jobs. And in 2009, when hundreds of thousands of jobs were on the line when General Motors and Chrysler were struggling for survival, you penned an op-ed titled “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.” The government’s rescue of these companies helped return them to profitability and save jobs. Given your record, how can Americans trust you on job creation?

FORMER MINNESOTA GOV. TIM PAWLENTY: Last week, you presented an economic plan that would dramatically cut the top individual income tax rate and the corporate tax rate, depriving the government of up to $7.8 trillion in tax revenue. And that’s on top of the $2.5 trillion cost of extending all of the Bush tax cuts. You’ve said you would pay for the cuts with a nearly unprecedented economic growth rate of 5 percent a year for 10 years that even you yourself say is an “aspiration.” But, in case we are unable to achieve that growth rate, how would you balance the budget with these massive new tax cuts, especially since you’ve taken military cuts off the table?

REP. MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN): You voted for the GOP Medicare privatization plan, but later said there is an “asterisk” by your vote because, you said, “I’m concerned about shifting the cost burden to senior citizens.” Indeed, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says seniors would pay thousands of dollars more each year for their health care starting in 2022. By now, nearly all of your potential opponents have come out in support of the plan — do you fully support it? If not, why?

FORMER SEN. RICK SANTORUM (R-PA): Several recent polls show that a majority of Americans are in favor of gay marriage.  Republicans here in New Hampshire have veto-proof majorities in both chambers, but chose to not pursue repealing gay marriage to focus on jobs and the economy. Was that the right decision?

FORMER GODFATHER’S PIZZA CEO HERMAN CAIN: In March, you said you would not appoint Muslims to a Cain administration’s cabinet and then, just this past week on Fox News host Glenn Beck’s show, you called for special loyalty oaths for Muslim political appointees, which you would not give to members of other religions. You’ve also publicly calls on Americans to “re-read” the Constitution, but isn’t your singling out of Muslims unconstitutional under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment?

FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH: Before later backtracking, you famously said that the GOP Medicare privatization plan was “right-wing social engineering.” You later disavowed those comments and pledged support for the plan. But now, given the fact that numerous polls showing the plan to be unpopular, the blowback Republican lawmakers faced in their home districts over it, and the results of the special election in New York’s 26th Congressional District, were you right the first time?

REP. RON PAUL (R-TX): You have been very outspoken about your interpretation of the Constitution, passionately arguing that most of what the federal government does today — including Social Security and Medicare — is unconstitutional. As president, would you work to completely repeal these social safety net programs? You’ve also suggested the Civil Rights Act was an unconstitutional encroachment on property owners. Would you work to repeal it? What about similar laws like the Voters With Disability Act or the Voting Rights Act?

Today’s Brief: Important Stories That You May Have Missed

A persistent slowdown in hiring is the biggest threat facing the U.S. recovery, according to a group of economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal. Economists have sharply cut the number of jobs they predict the economy will create. “If jobs don’t grow fast enough, the recovery will sputter,” said economist Nicholas S. Perna of Perna Associates.

President Obama is moving aggressively to win back Wall Street donors who gave heavily to his campaign in 2008. Among Obama’s efforts was a meeting with more than two dozen Wall Street executives at the White House earlier this year.

The United Nations said Sunday that May was the deadliest month for Afghan civilians since the agency began tracking their deaths in 2007. “We’re very concerned about this because, historically, civilian harm increases over the summer fighting months, and we’ve only just begun the summer now,” said Georgette Gagnon, who directs the U.N.’s human rights mission in Kabul.

Gareth Porter of IPS casts doubt on U.S. military claims of capturing over 4,000 Taliban. He writes, “More than 80 percent of those called captured Taliban fighters were released within days of having been picked up, because they were found to have been innocent civilians, according to official U.S. military data.”

The Obama administration is launching a new “Campaign to Cut Waste” that includes plans to close or consolidate about 500 federal websites as part of an effort to reduce government overlap. In a video announcing the initiative, Obama joked that the government doesn’t need websites devoted to desert tortoises or a quintet of U.S. Forest Service rangers who play the fiddle.

Tomorrow, President Obama will become the first U.S. president in 50 years to visit Puerto Rico. The last president to do so was John F. Kennedy. The island, whose future status remains in limbo, is “crippled by a soaring murder rate, mass exodus and 16.2 percent unemployment.”

And finally: After CNN blocked former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson (R) from participating in tonight’s debate, Fox News host John Stossel decided to throw Johnson a bone and invited him to debate “President Obama” — in the form of Obama impersonator Reggie Brown. In a “SNL”-worthy seven-minute segment, Brown recited “real Obama quotes” for Johnson to counter in front of “a small studio audience” that “was there to clap for Johnson and boo fake POTUS.”

A new GOP push to delay repealing DADT is on –

If you thought the fight to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was finally over, think again.

We all thought it was a done deal when President Obama signed the repeal into law. But House Republicans pulled a stunt that could delay or even stop the repeal from taking effect by passing an outrageous series of amendments to the bill that funds our military.

We can’t stay silent in the face of this new GOP push to turn back the clock on repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t tell.

Help the DCCC surpass their goal of getting 100,000 signatures to their petition supporting the repeal. We need to hold the House Republicans accountable for putting their radical social agenda ahead of keeping our military strong and our families safe.

Voice your outrage at House Republicans trying to turn back the clock on repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Sign our petition and then forward it to your friends and family.http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca50/1b9dd8ab/486ed6cc/4e0cee73/619517217/VEsH/

When I served in Congress, it was an honor to sponsor and fight for legislation to finally end this discriminatory policy. As an Army officer, I saw firsthand how the policy forces patriots to lie about who they are just so they can defend the freedoms that make America great.

We could not have passed legislation to repeal this policy without your grassroots support. Now, we must keep the pressure on, by exposing the despicable tactics that the Republicans are using to stop the repeal from taking effect.

Sign our petition opposing the efforts being made by House Republicans to turn back the clock on repeal.    http://www.dccc.org/page/m/1d63ca50/1b9dd8ab/486ed6cc/4e0cee73/619517217/VEsH/

We’ve come too far. We must see this fight through to the end.

It’s time to put Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the history books for good.

Leading the charge toward an electric vehicle fleet … Official Google blog -Green blog

Over the last few years, several innovative electric vehicle (EV) technologies have emerged in the marketplace and we’ve been working to update our green transportation infrastructure. As a result, we’ve now developed the largest corporate EV charging infrastructure in the country. We’re also including the next generation of plug-in vehicles in Gfleet, our car-sharing program for Googlers.

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 10:02 AM PDT

(Cross-posted on the Green Blog)

When Google.org launched the RechargeIt initiative in 2007, there were no commercially available plug-in hybrid EVs on the market. So we bought several Toyota Priuses and had them retrofitted with A123 Hymotion batteries to create our own mini-fleet of plug-in hybrids to demonstrate the technology. It was the birth of Gfleet, which has since become a valued perk and makes it easier for Googlers to use our biodiesel shuttle system to commute to work by providing green transportation options for people after they arrive at the Googleplex. The new Gfleet will include more than 30 plug-ins, starting with Chevrolet Volts and Nissan LEAFs, several of which have already arrived and are available for Googlers to use today. We’ll be adding models from other manufacturers as they become available.

To juice up our new cars and provide more charging options for Googlers, we’ve been working with Coulomb Technologies’ ChargePoint® Network to continue to expand our EV charging infrastructure. We’ve added 71 new and faster Level 2 chargers to the 150 Level 1 chargers we’ve installed over the last few years, bringing our total capacity to more than 200 chargers, with another 250 new ones on the way. The ChargePoint Network provides us the charging data necessary to track and report on the success of our green transportation initiative.

Overall, our goal is to electrify five percent of our parking spaces—all over campus and free of charge (pun intended) to Googlers. Our expanded charging system has already helped several Googlers decide to buy new EVs of their own, and we hope others will, too.

All told, Gfleet and our biodiesel shuttle system result in net annual savings of more than 5,400 tonnes of CO2. That’s like taking over 2,000 cars off the road, or avoiding 14 million vehicle miles every year! But we’re only one company, so we hope other companies think about how they can incorporate these new technologies into their own infrastructure. By supporting new, green transportation technologies, we’re enabling our employees to be green and doing our part to help spur growth in the industry.

Transforming Washington’s Budget … Gregoire’s website

“We’ll walk away from this session with a stronger sense of partnership and cooperation – as well as a balanced budget that ensures we have the financial resources to provide core services now and into the future. And we developed that balanced budget with no new revenue, with no short-term fixes and with no budget gimmicks. We did it by tackling long term costs, by making government leaner and more efficient and by implementing innovative reforms that ensure the state can continue to provide critical services like health care, education and public safety.” Gov. Gregoire

Medicare – Daniel Mintz, MoveOn.org

President Obama has to decide whether he’s going to save Medicare—or whetherRepublicans will once again get their way by holding the economy hostage.Democrats in Congress have already taken a strong stand against making any Medicare cuts, but so far the WhiteHouse has been silent on whether it’s willing to compromise with the Republicans‘ extreme demands.1

Let’s send President Obama a message: if he stands up to the Republican hostage takers, we’ll have his back.
Republicans have had a lot of success taking the economy hostage and demandinga conservative ideological ransom. And they’re at it again—this time over the debt ceiling, which ensures the government doesn’t default on its debt.

Normally, this vote is routine, but this time, Republicans are digging in their heels—refusing to vote for the debt ceiling increase—unless their plan to eliminate Medicare is passed.2

But the sand is shifting under the Republicans’ feet. They lost in the recent New York special election, which was all about Medicare.3 And their Medicare destruction plan is bombing at the polls.4

The one thing Democrats could do right now to let the Republicans back in the game would be to agree to Medicarecuts. Not only would it betray all the people who rely on Medicare (and all of us who will in the future), it wouldneutralize any political advantage the Democrats have gained this past month.

Nancy Pelosi is standing strong in the House against any cuts to Medicare.5 But the only way to protectMedicare from Republican attacks is for President Obama to take Medicare cuts off the table during negotiations over raisingthe debt ceiling.

Can you tell President Obama you’ll have his back if he stands strong and doesn’t let the Republicans holdthe economy hostage to force cuts to Medicare? Click here to sign:

Drop Fox … Matt Butler, President and CEO

This week, we got the good news that Orbitz has responded to the concerns of its customers and agreed to uphold its values. Thanks to your efforts, Orbitz has agreed to undergo a review process. They’re going to review the examples we gave them of slurs against the LGBT community and environmental misinformation to ensure that how they distribute their ad dollars no longer conflicts with their stated standards of responsibility.

Orbitz is setting an example by doing the right thing here — and we need to make sure other advertisers get the message.

Tell Fox News advertisers it’s time to Drop Fox.

Every day, the advertisers who sponsor Fox News programming give financial support to a divisive and deliberately dishonest political operation. Fox’s climate science misinformation, race-baiting, anti-LGBT attacks and smears against the Latino community are irresponsible and unacceptable for anyself-described news network. Advertisers need to know that their dollars are supporting Fox News’ campaign of deception and we need your help in informing them about the consequences of supporting Fox.

Tell Fox News advertisers it’s time to Drop Fox.

Moving forward, we’ll be reaching out to other Fox advertisers to let them know why they shouldn’t sponsor Fox News. The most important thing they can hear is that there’s a strong coalition of organizations and individuals coming together in this essential education effort.

Thanks again for your support — none of this can happen without your help.

eNews: Dead Sea Turtles in the Gulf …Defenders of Wildlife

Last year’s devastating Deepwater Horizon disaster was a serious blow for sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. But the catastrophe for the sea turtles hasn’t ended yet.

Already this year, more than 340 dead sea turtles have washed ashore on the Gulf Coast – more than three times the annual average — and the death toll is likely to be much higher.  Signs point to shrimp fishing as a likely cause for the spike in deaths — perhaps combined with the lingering effects of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Yet the government has not taken action to save these animals struggling to survive. Defenders and our conservation partners have launched a lifesaving lawsuit to protect sea turtles, but federal officials need to hear from you.

Court Rules Against Poison

The Supreme Court rejected the pesticide industry’s request for a hearing on an EPA decision regarding domestic food tolerances of carbofuran – a deadly poison that Defenders has fought to keep off U.S. shelves and to reduce its use abroad. Carbofuran has killed millions of birds and other wildlife in the U.S. and remains a threat to struggling African lions.

Remembering Nina Leopold Bradley

Dr. Nina Leopold Bradley carried on the conservation legacy of her father, the legendary Aldo Leopold. She used her voice to champion ecological values and the conservation of natural resources. Through her work, she helped us understand that as we work to protect the environment, we are also protecting ourselves.

“She truly carried on her father’s mission and has been a personal  inspiration to me throughout my career,” says Jamie Rappaport Clark, Executive Vice President of Defenders of Wildlife. “Thanks to her vast research and rich legacy, her own ‘green fire’ will continue to burn.”

Dr. Bradley died peacefully at her home in Wisconsin at the age of 93.
