They’re censoring you …Rep. Steve Israel, DCCC Chairman

First, House Republicans recklessly voted to end Medicare for seniors but give more tax breaks to billionaires. Now, they’re trying to silence any Democrat who dares to speak the truth about it.

Republican leaders were caught censoring official government communications that talk about the GOP’s radical plan to end Medicare. You can help us fight back right now and make your voice heard.

June 30th marks the Federal Election Commission (FEC) deadline for both parties to report their fundraising. This is the first FEC deadline since the 2012 race started and the media will use it to judge Democrats’ and President Obama’s momentum for 2012.

Help us meet our critical $1 Million goal by June 30th. Contribute $3 or more today and a group of House Democrats will match every dollar with one of their own. We need 109 more contributors from Seattle to hit our goal.

Trust me, your actions today will have a huge impact for Democrats in 2012.

The Republicans are trying to defeat President Obama and keep Democrats in the minority by out-raising us on this first important FEC deadline of the race – and relying on right-wing billionaires like the Koch Brothers and secret special interest money to do it.

We can absolutely beat them, but only if every grassroots Democrat acts right now.

Contribute $3 or more before June 30th and a group of House Democrats will match your gift dollar-for-dollar, doubling your impact.

The calendar may say 2011, but considering how much media focus is going to be on this first FEC deadline if the campaign, it’s already make-or-break time for 2012.

Let’s not miss this opportunity. Please act today.

         Rep. Steve Israel

P.S. This is it — the first FEC fundraising deadline of the 2012 race. The media will use our totals to judge Democrats’ and President Obama’s chances for success next year. Contribute today >>

The featured picture is of the I-5 Peace Arch.

I needed some feeling of peace today. Actually, we probably will all feel the need for some peaceful thoughts as we watch members of Congress play politics with American lives. Congress might have until August to raise the debt ceiling but the evidence is becoming quite clear that Republicans have absolutely no intention of helping their Fellow Americans and or the Economy move toward that path of progress let alone the 21st Century, so the picture on the left is of our I-5 Peace Arch on the Canadian Border.

In 2010, right around this time a vote was taken and while the Democratic Party was trying to get Americans back to work by introducing legislation to be passed Republicans acted and continue to act as if Corporate America is the only people, they trust and the following was what happened.  Last night, June/2010 the following comments were made after the jobs/tax extenders bill failed in the Senate again 56-40 -”Tonight, every single Republican voted to deny states critical aid that would keep firefighters, police offices and teachers employed,” said Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). “And tonight, every single Republican voted to tell the one in ten Americans who have lost their jobs that they are on their own.” Please call your representative in Congress.  The American people are about tired of the BS offered up by both sides of the aisle but after watching  listening to TV and or radio the sad sad reality is that people are willing to vote against their best interest.

Apparently, folks have forgotten that it has been a Republican mission to vote against their fellow Americans calling it unnecessary spending though if anyone recalls that these are the same folks who voted against stimulus money while  taking the stimulus money, shoot every state was going to get it whether they said no because it was an emergency. It was slightly amusing though shortly lived and definitely offensive now that the number of Politicians with negative comments about the stimulus funds even though they held elaborate ceremonies with ribbon cutting, offering huge checks, took responsibility for the effort and some even asked for more money.  I am not sure how anyone else feels but knowing that the number of Governors that took the stimulus money to balance their budgets was disturbing enough. It was not just disturbing but hearing how Republican Governors made a choice of Profits over the People in their states by giving money  to private sector who turned out to be friends like the Koch brothers is felonious at best . It is also quite possible some of those very Republican Governors have businesses that received direct or non- direct advantages sort of like those drug testing clinics that belong to the governor who has decided that all state employees be tested for drug use. I may be wrong but reports are he is the only one with those clinics and this past weekend there were reports that rep. Paul Ryan stands to make a lot of money if his plan is implemented. If all that we have heard about our so-called Public Servants is correct, the stimulus money was obviously misused and some folks in office abused their positions.  We have Governors saying their states are broke though some had surpluses while the private sector being a Republicans best friend is still unwilling to open up the purse strings or stop sending jobs offshore until Americans accept lower wages and or compete for  what used to be Public Service jobs turned private and fee based . The current attitudes coming from Republicans will only drive unemployment up.  The obvious choice would be to place a Public Jobs Works bill on the table that would create jobs that will take care of our crumbling infrastructure, accept that at this moment in time we need everyone to participate. The idea that people are actually against fair share is beyond me but that Republican view currently being forced upon our fellow Americans in some states right this very moment is a reality.  It’s the 21st Century people. We need members of Congress to walk through a feature like our Arch to bring peace over them and maybe they will all come to the same conclusion two and a half years later. That all members of Congress need to participate in fair share as well as vote yes to Jobs bills that include county, state, or federal workers. Since when do we have  to tell companies like BP or other big Corporations that they should be held completely accountable for their errors; let us hope all Americans heard the Barton, Bachmann; cable heads and Boehner comments about a year ago because those- Corporatist-Republicans are still at it. The escrow was for We the People and was not a Chicago style take down as suggested. Republican Congressmen like Barton came out in support and the protection of a company that has ruined not only the Gulf Coast, the livelihoods, the environment the Marshes, Estuaries and now the beaches in Louisiana are suffering, which may affect every aspect of their economy for decades. Barton pulled those comments back but as I have said, those comments cannot be put back into any bottle and hopefully Americans will not forget or forgive.

If you just cannot enjoy our I-5 Peace Arch on the Canadian Border try breathing deeply in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth … repeat as needed

Re: Your phone bill …Rashad Robinson, ColorOfChange.org

Since Thursday, more than 30,000 of you have stood up to say NO to the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile – a deal that would threaten freedom of speech online, our communities, and our pocketbooks. But we still need your voice!

Monday is the deadline for comments to the FCC, and AT&T has used the support of several prominent civil rights groups — many of whom have deep relationships with AT&T — to make the false claim that a merger with T-Mobile will help black folks.

It’s important show the FCC that everyday people, especially Black folks, oppose the merger. Please click below to add your voice — it only takes a moment.  And after you do, please ask your friends and family to do the same.

Thanks and Peace,

– Rashad, James, Gabriel, William, Dani, Matt, Natasha, and the rest of the ColorOfchange.org team

   June 19th, 2011

If AT&T and T-Mobile merge, it will mean higher prices, lost jobs and a threat to a free and open Internet.
Tell the FCC to block the deal:

Dear Barbara,

AT&T wants to buy T-Mobile — and it could have huge, negative consequences, especially for Black Americans.

The deal is likely to destroy jobs1, raise the price of cellular service2, and threaten net neutrality for wireless high-speed Internet.3 Net neutrality is the principle that prevents large corporations from marginalizing voices they disagree with or that get in the way of their profits. It’s critical for groups like ColorOfChange that challenge the political and corporate status quo. Protecting net neutrality for wireless broadband is increasingly important as more and more people use their phones to access the Internet, especially African Americans.4

Monday is the deadline for public comment with the FCC, and several prominent civil rights groups — many of whom have deep relationships with AT&T — have lined up in support of the merger, promoting misleading arguments, whether conscious of the fact or not.5

It’s why your voice is critical.  The FCC needs to hear from Black folks and our allies of every race who understand the problems with this deal. Please join us in calling on the FCC to block AT&T’s merger with T-Mobile:

http://act.colorofchange.org/go/877?akid=2036.1174326.mW7TbP&t=6

Getting rid of the competition

AT&T has said that “The wireless marketplace will become more competitive” because of this merger — but that’s the exact opposite of what’s likely to happen. If AT&T merges with T-Mobile, it will mean even less competition in an industry that is already dominated by just four big companies.6 AT&T and T-Mobile are the second and fourth largest wireless companies. If they merge, it will mean that the two largest remaining companies — AT&T and Verizon — will control nearly 80% of the wireless market.7

The reduced competition is likely to have serious consequences:
Higher prices for everyone. T-Mobile is currently one of the most affordable options for wireless service, and AT&T is significantly more expensive. This merger would eliminate one of the most affordable cellular providers. But prices wouldn’t just go up for T-Mobile customers.8 Because T-Mobile would no longer be competing with AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, there would be less pressure on the remaining companies to keep their prices down.9 The remaining companies will have every reason to raise their prices — because customers will have nowhere else to go.

Worse service, less innovation. For the same reason that prices for cell phone service would go up, the quality of service would likely get worse. With less competition (and less of a need to attract and retain customers) cellular providers will have less incentive to invest in improving their services and developing new technologies. On top of that, AT&T has a bad track record when it comes to good service — they were rated the worst wireless carrier by Consumer Reports last year.10

A grave threat to net neutrality. Net neutrality has guided the Internet’s operation since it began. It guarantees that information you put online is treated the same as anyone else’s information in terms of its basic ability to travel across the Internet. It’s the reason the Internet is so diverse — and so powerful. Anyone with a good idea can find their audience online, whether or not there’s money to promote the idea or money to be made from it. Net neutrality is what’s allowed groups like ColorOfChange to speak freely, without corporate gatekeepers or censors — unlike what we see with radio and TV.
If AT&T and T-Mobile are allowed to merge, net neutrality will be at even greater risk — two companies that are hostile to net neutrality (AT&T and Verizon) will dominate wireless Internet access. They’ll have no serious competitors, and no effective government regulation to hold them accountable.
False and deceptive arguments

The main argument put forth by civil rights organizations supporting the merger has been that it would help close the digital divide by allowing AT&T to speed up its deployment of high-speed wireless Internet service.  We completely agree with the need to increase the availability of broadband, but allowing AT&T to take over T-Mobile won’t help — in fact, it’s likely to hurt it.

Let’s take a look at two of the core claims made by AT&T and the civil rights organizations supporting this merger:

Claim: The merger is needed to help expand affordable high-speedmobile Internet access. AT&T says that it doesn’t currently have a big enough slice of the airwaves (known as “spectrum”) that can be used to broadcast wireless signals, and that by acquiring T-Mobile and its spectrum AT&T will be able to more quickly deploy its next-generation broadband wireless network. Civil rights groups have echoed this argument and said that the merger will help more African Americans connect to high-speed Internet access.

The reality: AT&T does not need to merge with T-Mobile to provide faster Internet access and the merger will likely increase the cost of wireless service. The truth is that AT&T already has lots of spectrum that it’s not using and does not need to merge with T-Mobile to roll out faster mobile Internet access. AT&T hasn’t invested enough in making better use of the spectrum it has;11 instead it has focused on acquiring other wireless companies. And with less competition, AT&T — and all other wireless Internet providers — will likely decrease their investment in their networks, if history is any indicator. AT&T itself has said that this merger will allow it to avoid investing in its networks.12 With less competition, prices for mobile Internet will go up — and it will become more difficult to close the digital divide since broadband access would remain unaffordable for too many people of color.

Claim: The merger will be good for workers, especially African Americans and Latinos. They point to the fact that AT&T has a good record of diversity in hiring and contracting, and the fact that AT&T is unionized, while T-Mobile has been anti-union.

The Reality: These issues have nothing to do with the merits of the merger. It’s true that AT&T has a good diversity record. It’s also true that AT&T’s workforce is unionized, while T-Mobile has been harshly anti-union. And AT&T should be applauded for their commitment to diversity in hiring. But AT&T’s record doesn’t mean that this merger will be good for consumers, our communities, or even workers — the most likely impact on workers is that thousands will be laid off. AT&T claims the merger will create jobs. But mergers almost always lead to layoffs, as the merging companies seek to eliminate redundant jobs — and there’s no reason to expect this merger will be any different.

Civil rights groups backing AT&T

In order to shift focus away from the facts regarding the serious impact of the deal on marginalized communities, AT&T is trying to show the FCC that civil rights groups support the merger. They are running a campaign to get non-profit organizations, especially groups that represent people of color, to support the deal. And it’s worked: Black civil rights groups like NAACP, National Action Network, and the National Urban League; Latino groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Hispanic Federation; and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have all come out in support of the deal.13,14,15

Many of these groups have very close, long-standing relationships with AT&T, and have received significant financial support from the company.16,17 But it’s not clear where this might be a factor and where it’s not.  We talked with Ben Jealous, the CEO of the NAACP, who explained that the organization receives equal support from organizations that are opposed to the merger, and that under his watch they have run campaigns targeting organizations that have given them money.  He also explained that their primary motivation for supporting AT&T in the merger is about diversity in hiring and jobs. AT&T has gotten high marks on the NAACP’s diversity scorecard, while T-Mobile has refused to participate.  The NAACP also sees the potential for a significant increase in union jobs resulting from the merger — another reason for its support.  At the same time, Hilary Shelton, the NAACP’s head of policy, has argued (and been cited publicly as arguing) that the deal will help close the digital divide and expand access. Jealous said that the statements issued thus far are preliminary, and that the broadband impact issue is one they would want to look at more closely.  However, the only comments on record are those from Shelton and significant damage has already been done.

We weren’t able to talk with other groups, so it’s harder to understand their perspectives or motivations with precision — whether it’s a function of long-standing relationships, a lack of understanding of the core issues, finances, or something else. But the evidence of coordination is clear. The groups that support the merger use strikingly similar arguments to support their decision — and sometimes have used identical language. In letters to the FCC by the National Action Network and National Urban League, several sentences and an entire paragraph are exactly the same.18,19

How we can make a difference

The FCC has to decide whether to approve this merger, and it’s taking public comments until June 20th. We can’t let those with financial ties to AT&T be the only voices heard. If enough of us speak out now, we can make it clear that these groups and individuals don’t speak for us, while letting the FCC know that Black Americans and our allies are against this merger.

Please join us in calling on the FCC to deny the AT&T/T-Mobile merger:

This video really moved me …a message from Michelle Obama

As families around the country get together to celebrate fathers today, I’m thinking about dads like Alex.

Alex is the father of two boys and two girls, ages six to 13. During the week, he works the 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift as a front-desk supervisor at a Seattle hotel. After work and on the weekends, he devotes his time to a summer organizing program that’s giving more than 1,500 first-time organizers the training they need to help build this movement in their communities.

He says he hopes this organizing work will help teach his kids the power one person can have — that if “they see something that needs to be changed, they know they can make a difference.”

I wanted to share a video of Alex explaining what prompted him to join this program and devote his summer to this work.

I was really moved by what he had to say. Take a look, and share it with a dad you’re thinking about today:

Today, I’m also proud of my husband, the man who drove our first daughter and me home from the hospital 13 years ago next month, determined to be the kind of father he hadn’t had for himself.

Barack often says he decided that day that if he could be anything in life, he’d be a good dad, and he dedicated himself then and there to making sure our daughter had every opportunity he could provide.

When it comes down to it, that’s why we’re all here — Barack, Alex, myself, and everyone who’s part of this campaign. We’re all working to make sure we leave our kids with a country that’s fairer and more full of opportunity — just as our parents did for us.

Thank you for being part of that work, and part of this campaign.

Wishing you a happy Father’s Day,

   Michelle

DCCC Rapid Response

When you give now, every $ will be matched by Democratic Senators

Republicans steamrolled into the House with empty promises of economic renewal. But instead they’ve chosen Big Oil over Medicare, health care companies over women’s rights, the rich over the middle class.

We’ve been able to stop them with our Democratic majority in the Senate. But if they capture just four of the 23 Democratic seats up for grabs in 2012, anything they dream up will sail through Congress while no progressive ideas survive.

Two years ago, we averted that nightmare scenario. We can do it again now, but only if Democrats pull together and rise up to make a difference. Please give whatever you can to the DSCC today and help them raise $683,000 by their crucial June 30 end-of-quarter deadline. Democratic senators will match every dollar you give, because falling short of this goal could mean the Senate slips from our grasp.

The GOP is playing politics with serious issues. One day they’re threatening to shut down the government, putting people out of work and delaying benefits seniors and veterans depend upon. The next, they’re willing to let the economy go into default while spending billions of tax dollars on Big Oil subsidies.

As they perform these political stunts, Republicans seem to have no problem turning a blind eye to the struggles of hardworking Americans, pressing forward with a reckless budget that so clearly hurts working families who struggle to survive from paycheck to paycheck.

So how can they possibly win? The GOP is a master of the old bait and switch. They did it in 2010, and they’ll surely try it in 2012. So it’s up to us to make sure they don’t get away with it.

Give now to the DSCC so we can fight for our Democratic majority in the Senate. Republicans will have 23 opportunities to take away four of our seats next year, so we’ve got to start working now to protect our senators who are up for re-election and support our great Democratic challengers.

There’s no question about it—the math is daunting. We’ve got 23 seats up for grabs; they’ve got only 10. All they need to do is grab four to win the Senate. But if we do everything we can right now, I know we can win.

                                Sincerely,

                                Kirsten Gillibrand

Great polling this week in two crucial states – Nevada and Pennsylvania. Nevada is looking like a better and better pickup opportunity, with Shelley Berkley leading Dean “End Medicare” Heller by five points. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats said they will NOT allow cuts to Medicare benefits, while Census numbers show that Republican attempts to end Medicare just might bite them on Election Day. And Republicans are working to pass bills to try to suppress the Democratic vote in important states including Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio and Texas, and we’ve got a way you can fight back.

As always, you can share the clips below with friends and family via Facebook here and Twitter here.

If this email was forwarded to you, and you’d like to see what I’m reading each week, sign up here

NEW POLL: Berkley Leading Heller in Nevada
So far, getting appointed to the Senate hasn’t done much for Dean “I Voted to Kill Medicare Twice” Heller. According to a new poll, Rep. Shelley Berkley is leading Heller by 5 points, 42-37. And unfavorable opinions of Heller have spiked, which isn’t surprising considering his attacks on Medicare. Berkley has hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped. You can read a news story on the poll here, or dive into the polling memo yourself here.

NEW POLL: Casey Remains Tough to Beat in Pennsylvania
Quinnipiac just released new polling on Sen. Bob Casey, and it shows he’ll be tough to beat. 47 percent of Pennsylvanians would choose Casey over a generic Republican (31 percent), including 44 percent of independent voters – a strong position to be in this early in the election cycle. The GOP has yet to find a credible opponent for Casey – and these latest poll numbers probably won’t help them any. Full Article »

Senate Democrats Speak: No Medicare Benefit Cuts!
It’s shocking: Republicans are willing to let the nation default unless Medicare is gutted – threatening to send our economy into a second Great Depression. War on Medicare Might Bite GOP in 2012
Really interesting read: According to a Bloomberg analysis of census reports, nine of the 10 congressional districts likely to be hardest-hit by the Republican End Medicare Plan are represented by Republicans. This is going to be a HUGE issue in 2012 – count on it. Full Article »

We’ve Got Candidates – Help Us Build Winning Campaigns!
Nevada and Pennsylvania are two states we’ve got to win in 2012 to keep our Senate majority. If the GOP gains only 4 seats, we lose our majority. We’ve seen what THAT’s like – just take a look at the House. To stop them, we need $700,000 by our June 30 FEC deadline to build campaign infrastructure, get our message out and hold each and every Republicans accountable for their radical plans (end Medicare, anyone?) Can you please help us out?

George Allen has a Plan – and Plenty of Broken Promises
Virginia Senate candidate and failed Republican Senator George Allen released a “Blueprint” plan for America’s future this week, but it mostly reads like a laundry list of old, broken promises. Allen promises to cut spending – but he turned a large budget surplus into a record federal deficit. Allen promises to shrink government – but expanded state government as governor. Allen promises to end earmarks – but bragged about them as senator. Electing Allen to the Senate again would be like a really bad sequel to a really bad movie. Full Article »

If You Can’t Win on the Issues …
This is what we’re up against: Republican governors and legislatures in six states – including Florida, Texas, Wisconsin and Ohio – have already passed or are working to pass laws that would suppress the Democratic vote. An example: Florida’s Republican governor, Rick Scott, signed a bill curtailing early voting. And it’s not just Democrats speaking out against these tactics. In an editorial, USA Today said the old, infirm, young and poor are most likely to be affected by such laws. “Shouldn’t Republicans be looking for ways to expand their appeal to these groups, rather than throwing obstacles in their way?” Full Article »

a message from … Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader

For more than five months, House Republicans have tried to impose their radical, right-wing agenda on the American people. Just a few weeks ago they introduced a bill to dismantle Social Security just after they voted to end Medicare.

Now is our chance to respond. For the actions you make today can directly impact Democrats‘ chances in 2012.

On June 30th, we’ll face the first Federal Election Commission (FEC) quarterly filing deadline since the Republicans’ shameful vote to end Medicare while protecting tax breaks for the wealthy and Big Oil. The political world will use the grassroots fundraising numbers we report as a measure of Democrats and President Obama’s momentum for 2012.

A contribution today will not only help us to have a strong showing — it can also be put to work immediately to help us expose Republican congressmen and congresswomen back in their districts. This deadline is so important that if you give a gift today, my House colleagues will match it with a gift of their own dollar-for-dollar.

Contribute $3 or more today and my fellow House Democrats will match every dollar you give with one of their own, doubling your impact.

We cannot get distracted by Republican attacks. We must stay focused on recapturing the Majority in the House and electing President Obama in 2012. That’s why I’ve set a goal of raising $1 Million to show the world that we have the grassroots strength to take on the Tea Party Republican fringe and their secret donor-funded attack groups.

Together we can win and show the world Democrats are united behind President Obama’s agenda and have the strength to win the House Majority. Please contribute today.

Thank you. Nancy Pelosi
Democratic Leader

P.S. Shady right-wing outside groups are already gearing up with their secret money to wage misleading attacks against Democrats. We have just 12 days to exceed our $1 Million grassroots goal to show the world that Democrats are strong, united and on the path to winning the Majority. Contribute Now.
