Congress is back, but House Republicans are saying no to creating jobs.Instead, they are rushing to pass legislation that would let the Boeing Co. off the hook for its alleged violations of labor law. They’ve combined this get-out-of-jail-free card for Boeing with vicious attacks on workers’ rights.Hurry: A vote is expected as early as Thursday.
Pop quiz: What would happen if H.R. 2587—a bill that House Republicans plan to bring up for a vote as early as this Thursday—became law?
A. It would eliminate any remedy for alleged law-breaking by the Boeing Co.—which is accused of moving aircraft production away from its Washington Statefacility in retaliation for workers exercising their legal rights—before an ongoing trial can finish.B.It would gut our labor laws, so a company can never again face meaningful punishment for moving jobs to retaliate against workers who engage in perfectly legal behavior.C.It would show that a company with the right politician friends is above the law.D. All of the above.
If you answered D, you’re correct. Please help us stop these attacks on workers—combined with a get-out-of-jail-free card for Boeing—now. Click here to take action.Back in April, the general counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)—the federal agency tasked with protecting workers’ rights—took a routine step: enforcing a law that’s been on the books for more than 70 years. In America, no company is above the law.And on some things, the law is clear. For example, a company cannot retaliate against workers for exercising their legal rights by moving their jobs. When Boeing moved aircraft production away from its Washington State facility after workers exercised their legal right to strike, the board did its job: it investigated. And after examining the facts, the NLRB’s general counsel charged that Boeing illegally retaliated against its workers.

Rather than let the NLRB do its job, House Republicans are trying to let Boeing off the hook before their trial even finishes. They’ve already tried to interfere with the NLRB’s investigation and even threatened the agency’s general counsel. Now, they’re trying to pass a bill that both lets Boeing off the hook for alleged violations of workers’ rights and makes sweeping changes to the National Labor Relations Act that would result in serious, harmful changes to jobs and workers’ rights throughout the country.

Urge your representative to stop the partisan attacks on workers’ rights and create jobs for America.

Congress should be finding ways to work with the president to create jobs. But partisanship, led by tea party Republicans, has so dominated our national debate that many of our elected leaders are willing to ruin our economy to grab headlines and attention.

Instead of taking up bills that create jobs, House Republicans are once again pursuing a destructive political agenda. Of the many casualties, workers’ rights have climbed to the top of the list. It’s time for this to stop.

In Solidarity,

Manny Herrmann
Online Mobilization Coordinator, AFL-CIO

P.S. Here are just two examples of what life would look like for workers under the Republicans’ plan:

  • If a group of workers walked out of a plant because of unsafe working conditions, the company could decide to move the work and the jobs rather than fix the problem, and the NLRB would be powerless to protect the workers or their jobs.
  • If a group of women or African Americans joined together to protest race or sex discrimination by their employer, the company could simply transfer the work somewhere else, and the NLRB would be powerless to protect the workers.

Who is Bob Dold? …Michael Langenmayr, Democracy for America

Bob Dold is the weakest Republican running for reelection in 2012.

He’s from Illinois‘s tenth congressional district — the most Democratic district in the country represented by a Republican.

He’s a right-winger trying to sell himself as a moderate. He says he’s pro-choice, but voted to defund Planned Parenthood. He voted for Paul Ryan‘s plan to kill Medicare. He’s voted lockstep with John Boehner and the Tea Party majority to tear down the middle class and empower big corporations.

Karl Rove, the Koch brothers – they’re going to spend millions to keep Dold in office because they need rubber stamp congressmen like Dold to ram their big corporate agenda through Congress.

But their money can’t stand up to real people power and we can win with grassroots candidate Ilya Sheyman.

Please contribute $10 right now to help Ilya win in IL-10.

Ilya’s one of us. He’s a fighter. He’s a truth-teller. He’s a longtime DFA member.

He is a grassroots progressive and he’s putting together the sort of campaign that can beat a corporate rubber stamp like Dold — one fueled by volunteers on the ground, going door-to-door and making calls to voters across the district.

Ilya isn’t afraid to take on special interests and speak truth to power — and that’s the sort of Democrat we need more of in Washington.

Contribute $10 now to elect Ilya in Illinois.

Thank you for all that you do.

Stop the Myitsone Dam Project that Will Displace Thousands of People

The controversial Myanmar-China Myitsone Hydroelectric Project on the Irrawaddy River is moving forward.  Despite violent protests by environmental groups and ethnic minorities, Myanmar’s Electric Power Minister Zaw Min announced last week that the project, which if completed would be the 15th largest hydroelectric power stationin the world, would not be stopped.Tell Minister Zaw Min that progress at the expense of irreplaceable ecological resources is not progress at all.»

The Irrawaddy River is Myanmar’s most significant geological feature and main waterway, supporting the nation’s rice paddies and in turn, millions of individual families.  The proposed project site lies directly on top of a major fault line and over 12,000 people have already been displaced.  No detailed environmental or risk assessment has been conducted except for a brief 2009 assessment by China’s CPI Corporation that was leaked this year, which warned of “serious social and environmental problems” along the river and advised a site re-location.

Demand Myanmar protect not only its precious ecological resources but the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.»

Weekly Address: Passing the American Jobs Act

Sep 17, 2011 by

President Obama discusses the need for Congress to pass the American Jobs Act to put more people back to work, and more money back in the pockets of people who are working.

a message from Harry Reid …

We are locked in a struggle for America’s soul. Our very values are at risk.

Rick Perry calls Social Security a “monstrous lie.” Paul Ryan dreams of ending Medicare forever. And the Republican response to the thought of an uninsured coma patient? Grisly, callous shouting from the audience.

They want to reverse the steps our country took to care for the sick and prevent our parents and grandparents from living in squalor.

WWW.DSCC.ORG Contribute

Doing so would fundamentally change America. We simply must fight back.

The Republicans want to ride a wave of frustration to win four Senate seats so they can remake America. Unless you contribute to the DSCC’s $662,000 goal before midnight on Sept. 30, we won’t have the resources to stop them in their tracks.

This country could change forever. Don’t wait to fight for the ideals all of us believe in.

Click here to rush $5 or more to the DSCC before midnight on Sept. 30. The Republicans are four seats away from a total congressional takeover, and it’s up to us to raise $662,000 to beat them back.

WWW.DSCC.ORG Contribute

Everywhere you look, Republicans are assaulting the very idea that we are our brother’s keeper and that all Americans deserve a certain basic dignity.

The Republicans don’t seem to care that our people don’t have jobs. They refuse to lift a finger to get the economy moving again.

WWW.DSCC.ORG Contribute

The Republicans don’t seem to care that one in four American children live in poverty. They’re too busy lecturing us about the budget deficit they created while defending huge tax giveaways to the big corporations.

Democrats have always been the party that fights for the middle class – and now is no different. If we’re going to stand up to the special interests, the DSCC needs the grassroots to come through in a big way.

The DSCC is counting on grassroots donors for $662,000 before Sept. 30. Let’s make sure we get there.

Click here to rush $5 or more to the DSCC before midnight on Sept. 30. The Republicans are 4 seats away from a total congressional takeover, and it’s up to us to raise $662,000 to beat them back.

I know progress doesn’t always come as quickly as we’d like. But our values will always endure.

Democrats will always be the ones fighting for what’s right for the American people. Republicans will always fight for the super-rich and the big corporations.

Right now, we need you in this fight. Please give whatever you can right away.

Thank you,

Harry Reid

The Progress Report …WWJD? Not Let The Uninsured Die

Conservative Christians Rebuke Tea Party Extremists

ThinkProgress traveled to Liberty University, one of the most conservative Christian universities in the country,  earlier this week to cover a speech by Texas Governor Rick Perry. Following Perry’s speech, we asked students to comment on the shocking moment during this week’s GOP presidential debate when the Tea Party crowd cheered for the death of an uninsured man. Check out the video from ThinkProgress’ Scott Keyes:

Here’s the transcript:

KEYES: In the debate on Monday, there was the question of whether or not a 30  year old who doesn’t have health insurance and gets in a major  accident, we ought to just let him die or we ought to provide care for him.  What do you think would be the Christian thing to do?STUDENT 1: Definitely to give him care, no matter what your age is.

KEYES: What do you think the Christian thing to do there is?

STUDENT 2: If he didn’t have health insurance?

KEYES: Yeah.

STUDENT 2: I would say take care of him.

KEYES: Do you think it’s un-Christian to be letting uninsured people  die? What would you do?

STUDENT 3: Why would someone let anyone die just because they can’t pay  for something? That’s the thing I don’t understand. Me and my  family, we’re financially impaired right now, we’re in a shelter.  We have insurance and all that, but at the same time for those who  don’t have insurance, what’s the point of killing someone, taking  a life, just because they can’t pay for something? It’s like  going to a hospital, charging millions of dollars to have an operation to  save someone’s life, they can’t pay for it, okay so we’ve  got to kill them? We can’t save a life because they can’t pay for  it? That doesn’t make any sense to me, I don’t understand.

KEYES: Do you think that’s a Christian thing to let an uninsured person  die?

STUDENT 4: Absolutely not. I don’t see how that’s Christian in  any way. I mean “Christian.” I think everyone has the right to  life, including I don’t agree with capital punishment, I think that  those people also have a right to life.

KEYES: What do you think the Christian thing to do there would be?

STUDENT 5: I believe provide care for him. I believe we should provide some  care for him.

KEYES: What do you think, do you think that it would be Christian to let  uninsured people die?

STUDENT 6: I don’t think it is. I think that they should work towards  making sure that people no matter what should live.

STUDENT 3: I bet if Jesus came back right now, all them politicians, all them  doctors who had to do something like that would probably give their life to  Christ because they felt so bad about themselves. Because they knew that they  took a life just because someone couldn’t pay for it.

Evening Brief: Important Stories That You May Have Missed

Austin Frakt explains how Medicare premiums already vary by income.

The Georgia Tea Party is arguing that “the county should abandon its light  rail proposal because if the light rail line were to be completed, it would  become a magnet for terrorist attacks.”

Michelle Bachmann’s claim that “immigration law worked beautifully” in the  1960s overlooks the fact that those laws favored white immigrants from Northern European countries and excluded or disadvantaged Jews, Asians and Africans.

The United States, in all likelihood, will veto the Palestinian request for  United Nations recognized statehood but Notre Dame political science  professor Michael C. Desch argues that the Obama administration should start  looking at the long-term strategic benefits of not hindering the Palestinians at the UN.

The same group of neoconservatives who helped push the U.S. into invading  Iraq are now pushing for an indefinite U.S. military presence in Iraq.

President Obama angered environmentalists with his reversal on smog  regulations. But once it’s put into context, where does his green record really stand?

Fifty-one Congressional members have spoken out against the pending execution of Troy Davis next week, who is sentenced to death despite substantial doubt about the evidence.

Groups fire back at House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) claim that homosexuality is a choice as a reason for supporting the “Defense of Marriage Act.”

what Guy Cecil is reading …

Last week wasn’t great for Republican Senate candidates. The Truth-O-Meter found that Ohio’s Josh Mandel and Virginia’s George Allen lied. Fewer primary candidates mean Republican Sen. Dick Lugar might have a harder time winning the GOP nomination. Michigan Republicans are decidedly not excited about voting for congressman-turned-lobbyist Pete Hoekstra, and we’re going after all these Republicans on their willingness to end Social Security as we know it. And if you missed the GOP debate, this clip will tell you all you need to know about values of the Tea Party movement.

Truth-O-Meter Reads FALSE for Mandel and Allen
PolitiFact’s Truth-O-Meter found that both Ohio’s Josh Mandel and Virginia’s George Allen made claims that were completely and utterly false. Mandel lied about Sen. Sherrod Brown’s campaign finances, and Allen lied about cutting spending as governor. Nice try, Republicans.

Delph Not Running is Bad News for Lugar

Republican Sen. Dick Lugar got bad news this week when state Sen. Mike Delph said he’s not running in the Republican primary. Why is that bad news for Lugar? That makes it more likely that Richard Mourdock can win the primary. Two primary challengers could have split the anti-Lugar vote and let Lugar squeak through. In either case, we’ve got a great candidate in Joe Donnelly. This is one red seat we’ve got a good chance of turning blue. Full Article »

Conservative Activists Take a Pass on Pete

Bad news for Pete Hoekstra: Conservative activists in Michigan are saying that the congressman-turned-lobbyist can’t beat Sen. Debbie Stabenow, and they’re looking for a candidate who can. They’ve branded Hoekstra as a “Washington insider,” which certainly won’t endear him to Tea Party activists. Full Article »

DSCC Taking Social Security Fight Down the Ballot

Here’s an example of how the radical views being touted by Republican presidential candidates will affect races down the ballot. Last week, the DSCC launched an effort to tie a number of candidates, including Scott Brown of Massachusetts, George Allen of Virginia, Dean Heller of Nevada, Dennis Rehberg of Montana and Jeff Flake of Arizona, to Rick Perry’s view that Social Security should be scrapped. It’s a decidedly unpopular view with American voters, and we’re going to keep up the pressure. Full Article »

Your Gift Now Helps us Fight!

You know how high the stakes are in 2012. If the GOP flips only four seats, they’ll retake the Senate. We won’t be able to stop them from ending Social Security as we know it, or whatever else the Tea Party demands. We have a huge fundraising goal in September; we still need to raise $671,000 to meet it. Can you chip in to help us get there? Support Democrats »
