before tonight’s GOP debates … Guy Cecil

“This is not class warfare, it’s math.”

With those seven words, President Obama threw down the political gauntlet. No longer can Republicans continue tax breaks for the richest among us while slashing away at Medicare, Social Security and the middle class in the name of deficit reduction.

We are trying to collect 50,000 signatures before tonight’s GOP debate.
Click here and make sure the GOP knows you will fight for a deal that makes the ultra-rich pay their fair share.

The GOP candidates must know when they take that stage that Democrats are going to fight back.

We will fight because trying to deal with Republicans won’t work. The only “deal” they are interested in is the deal that lets people like Warren Buffett pay a smaller share of their income in taxes than their secretaries. It’s wrong, and President Obama’s “Buffett Rule” will help change that.

But they say President Obama is engaging in “class warfare.” And one Tea Party Congressman even said that he can’t afford a tax hike because he only has $400,000 per year to live on. $400,000 per year?!

Send the GOP a message tonight. Oppose their efforts to destroy Medicare, the middle class and President Obama.

This is not “class warfare.” It’s America’s middle class getting serious about fighting back.

Sincerely,

Guy Cecil

  • Petition the White
    House with We the People

    Posted by Katelyn Sabochik on
    September 22, 2011 at 10:25 AM EDT

    Today, we launched We the
    People on WhiteHouse.gov
    – a new platform that gives all Americans a way to
create and sign petitions on a range of issues affecting our nation.  And if a
petition gathers enough online signatures, it will be reviewed by policy experts
and you’ll receive an official response.

Throughout our history, Americans have used petitions as a way to join
together around issues they care about.  We the People brings that uniquely
American tradition into the 21st century.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. Create or Sign a Petition:  Anyone 13 or older can create
a WhiteHouse.gov account and create or sign a petition on WhiteHouse.gov asking
the Obama Administration to take action on a range issues.
    2. Build Support and Gather Signatures for your Petition: It’s
up to you to build support for a petition. Use email, Facebook, Twitter and word
of mouth to tell your friends, family and coworkers about the petitions you care
      about.
    3. The White House Reviews and Responds:  If a petition
reaches a certain threshold (initially 5,000 signatures within 30 days), it will
be reviewed by policy officials in the Administration and an official response
      will be issued.

We put together a short video to walk you through We the People.  Check it

President Obama marked the 19th anniversary of the International Day of Peace
with a series of meetings and events as he participated in the 66th session of
the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. The President began his
    day with an
    address to the General Assembly
, where he spoke about the remarkable changes
that have occurred throughout the world since the last gathering of this
    group:

This year has been a time of extraordinary transformation. More nations have
stepped forward to maintain international peace and security. And more
individuals are claiming their universal right to live in freedom and
    dignity.

Following the address, President Obama met
with Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel
    and pledged America’s commitment to
the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. The Prime
Minister agreed with President Obama’s assertion that direct negotiations
between Israel and Palestine are the only way to achieve that goal:

I think the Palestinians want to achieve a state through the international
community, but they’re not prepared yet to give peace to Israel in return.  And
my hope is that there will be other leaders in the world, responsible leaders,
who will heed your call, Mr. President, and oppose this effort to shortcut peace
negotiations — in fact, to avoid them. Because I think that avoiding these
negotiations is bad for Israel, bad for the Palestinians, and bad for
    peace.

  • Buffett Rule
    Facts and Fictions

    Posted by Gene Sperling on
    September 21, 2011 at 4:28 PM EDT

On Monday, the President proposed the Buffett Rule as one of five
    principles for comprehensive tax reform
. This is a rule of simple
fairness—no household making over $1 million annually should pay less in federal
taxes than middle-class families pay. Contrary to some misconceptions, the
Buffett Rule is not designed as the sole or main source of raising new revenues,
but one of five principles that should be achieved by tax reform:

    1. Cut rates
    2. Cut inefficient and unfair tax breaks
    3. Cut the deficit by $1.5 trillion over 10 years
    4. Increase investment and growth in the United States
    5. Observe the “Buffett rule.”

Of these principles — all of which we believe are key to reform — the Buffett
rule has received the most attention. It has been attacked with claims of “class
warfare” that are completely without merit. How can it be class warfare to
ensure that there is greater parity between the taxes paid by the most well-off
and those paid by tens of millions of hardworking families? Still, since not all
of the reports about the Buffett Rule have been accurate, I want to clarify what
we mean – and why the President believes this is an important principle. So let’s
look at what this rule is and is not:

Claim: This rule would raise taxes while the economy
    is weak.

Fact: The President’s plan does not raise
    anyone’s taxes in 2011 or 2012.
    The President believes that
the most well-off Americans should contribute to deficit reduction by paying
more, but under the President’s plan, all measures to raise additional revenue —
including fundamental tax reform — are effective starting in 2013.

In fact, the American Jobs Act
calls for $245 billion in immediate tax relief, providing a tax cut for both
workers and small businesses in 2012 by cutting the payroll taxes that both pay.
This builds on the President’s record of cutting taxes for the middle class and
    small business.

President Biden Announces Boosts for Small Business in Ohio

Posted by Amy Dudley on September
    21, 2011 at 2:49 PM EDT

Small businesses across the country got a boost yesterday when Vice President
Biden announced that 13 of the nation’s largest banks, in partnership with the
    Small Business Administration, have committed
    to increase small business lending
by a combined $20 billion over the next
    three years.

Speaking with SBA Administrator Karen Mills at Wrap Tite Inc. – a small
packing and shipping material company in Solon, Ohio – the Vice President told
the story of how a recent $1.5 million SBA-supported loan allowed Wrap Tite to
purchase and renovate a new facility in Solon, as well as hire five new
workers.  The new lending commitments announced today means more small
businesses like Wrap Tite will have access to the capital they need to help grow
the nation’s economy at the local level. As Vice President Biden said, “Small
business men and women – who are the engine of economic growth in America –
create two out of every three jobs in America.”

But, as the Vice President said in Ohio, the lending boost for small
businesses is only part of the story, and we cannot stop there. Urging Congress
to pass the American Jobs Act
right away, he described two key ways the bill would help small businesses grow
and hire in Ohio and across the country – by cutting their taxes and putting
money back in their customer’s pockets:

  • Helping
Veterans Transition to Careers in Nursing

    Posted by Mary Wakefield on
    September 21, 2011 at 2:00 PM EDT

Many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans received training as health care providers
while they served in their deployments. The Obama Administration is committed to
helping these veterans translate the health care skills gained during their
enlistment into nursing jobs when they return home.

However, veterans have found that their training in medic and certain other
health care roles do not fully meet the standards of academic training for
nursing programs. As a result, veterans have encountered difficulty gaining
academic credit for their health care training while enlisted.

To bridge this gap, the Obama Administration plans to take several steps. An
award will be made to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC)
College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CONHS), which will allow the nursing
school to work with key military leadership and training staff at the Medical
Education and Training Command in San Antonio, Texas to identify strategies to
align enlisted health care training and nursing academic credit.

The TAMUCC-COHNS has an existing federal grant to help residents of Texas who
are members of the military – and veterans with previous medical experience –
become registered nurses through distance learning technologies. In implementing
this program, TAMUCC-COHNS has seen firsthand the obstacles that arise from the
gap between enlisted health care training and academic training
    requirements.

Million More Young Adults Have Coverage Thanks to Health Law

    Posted by Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius on September 21, 2011 at 12:50 PM EDT

Ed. Note: Cross posted with the HealthCare.gov blog.

Last week we all got some great news when the Census Bureau released data
    showing that 500,000
    more young adults
in 2010 gained health coverage thanks to a provision of
the Affordable Care Act that allows young adults to stay on their parents’ plans
    until they turn 26.

Today, we got new data and even better news – the number of young adults with
health coverage has climbed even higher.

A new report shows that as of March 31, 2011, approximately one
million more young adults have coverage
    , compared with one year
    ago.

    The CDC’s National Health
    Interview Survey (NHIS
) shows that in the first quarter of 2011, the
percentage of adults between the ages of 19 and 25 with health insurance
increased to 69.6%, from 66.1% in 2010. This amounts to 1
    million more young adults
with insurance than last year, because of the
health law signed by President Obama. The Census Bureau’s results only included
data through the end of 2010. The report released from the CDC today includes
data from a portion of 2011.

These data are one more sign that the Affordable Care Act is working -
especially for young adults all across the country. We know young adults are the
group least likely to have health insurance and while most are in great health,
everyone needs insurance in case they experience an injury or illness.

“by the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.” -John Fleming

Try not to burst into tears when you read this:

Tea Party Republican Congressman John Fleming would have a rough go of it under President Obama’s new plan to make millionaires pay their fair share. In fact, he told MSNBC yesterday — and these are his words — “by the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over.”

Must be tough. Let’s make his life tougher.

If committed Democrats in Seattle and across the country chip in $4 before our big reporting deadline to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on September 30th, we’ll have the grassroots strength to support President Obama’s plan and kick out-of-touch Republicans like John Fleming out of Congress.

Contribute $4 or more right now to defeat out-of-touch Tea Party Republicans and show your support for President Obama’s plan to put middle class jobs before tax breaks for multi-millionaires and Big Oil companies. House Democrats will match your gift dollar-for-dollar.

As comical as Tea Party millionaire John Fleming’s comments are, there are too many Americans out there facing real struggles to feed their families right now. Maybe you know one. Maybe you’re in one.

September 30th will be the first FEC fundraising deadline since the President introduced his American Jobs Act to put people back to work, protect middle-class tax cuts in this tough time, and ensure that millionaires and Big Oil companies are paying their fair share.

As President Obama put it yesterday, “This is not class warfare. It’s math.” It’s unfair to ask seniors to give up the Medicare benefits they have earned while multi-millionaires pay taxes at lower rates than secretaries.

The world will be watching our fundraising totals on September 30th to determine whether Democrats are united behind President Obama’s plan. We must have a powerful showing.

Dear Friend,

Two weeks ago, over a thousand people gathered at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC to celebrate the Democratic National Convention Kick-off.

The energy was electric as we shared the excitement of being part of history in the making.  DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz summed it up best when she said,

This convention is about Americans coming together to commit ourselves and our country to a path that creates more opportunity. The success of this convention will be determined by the participation of you, the American people. This convention’s success will be based on engaging the American spirit and involving people who want to put their shoulder to the wheel and change the country for the better.

Now is the time that you can seize the momentum of that day by visiting our website and checking out the official 2012 convention merchandise store.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you. Thank you for signing up and thank you for being a part of this historic convention.  As we progress towards September 2012, I’ll be sending more updates and contests so you can stay informed.   www.store.charlottein2012.com

Revolt! GOP Plan To Kill Jobs Defeated

By         ThinkProgress War Room              on Sep 21, 2011 at 6:49 pm

GOP Efforts to Satisfy Tea Party Extremists Threaten Jobs, Disaster Aid

We warned you last week that Republicans and their job-killing agenda were back with a vengeance. Today, House Republicans put a measure up for a vote that would’ve threatened tens of thousands of American jobs. However, in a hugely embarrassing loss for Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), the plan was defeated after a bipartisan revolt caused the measure to fail on a vote of 195-230.

Here’s a rundown of what exactly caused the revolt and why it’s time for the Republican leadership to stand up to the Tea Party.

WHAT: The must-pass bill to keep the government funded and open after Sept. 30 when the current funding bill runs out.

Attached to the bill was a highly controversial measure that gives the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Disaster Relief Fund additional funding to pay for both recent disaster relief efforts and recovery projects from disasters that may have happened years ago — but only by stealing $1.5 BILLION from a successful job creation program to “offset” the spending to help disaster victims. Strangely, Republicans steal $1.5 BILLION from the jobs program, but only offset $1 BILLION in disaster funding.

THE JOBS REPUBLICANS WANT TO KILL: The program they want to steal $1.5 BILLION from, the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Program, has already created approximately 40,000 American jobs by spurring American manufacturing in 11 states across the country. The program, if it remains fully funded, stands to create at least another 50-60,000 American jobs in states like Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Louisiana, Illinois, and Michigan.

It’s also estimated that the advanced vehicles manufactured as a result of the program will also save us a whopping 311 MILLION gallons of gasoline.

WHY DEMOCRATS REVOLTED TODAY: They were strongly opposed to the GOP’s insistence on deep cuts to a vital jobs program in return for emergency disaster funding — especially at a time when Republicans refuse to ask Big Oil and billionaires to pay their fair share.

In addition, the Republican leadership in Congress all voted for $120 BILLION or so to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade, but now they want us to choose between helping Americans recover from natural disasters or helping Americans recover from our jobs crisis. That’s not the kind of choice we should have to make in America.

WHY REPUBLICANS REVOLTED TODAY: In an embarrassing setback for the House Republican leadership, 48 Republicans voted against the GOP’s own bill. But these Republicans didn’t revolt because they were concerned that the bill cut funding to an important jobs program. They revolted because the bill didn’t cut spending enough and because Republicans had promised not to move large omnibus spending bills when they came power after the 2010 election.

The defeat was all the more embarrassing because Boehner is reported to have threatened Republicans earlier in the day today:

Speaking to a closed meeting of House Republicans Wednesday morning, the Ohio Republican made it clear to his GOP colleagues that he was ready to move to strip members of committee assignments if they defy the leadership on the government funding measure headed for a vote this evening.

A BIPARTISAN ALTERNATIVE TO HELP DISASTER VICTIMS: Just last week, the Senate passed a bill providing about $7 BILLION in new disaster funding that was not offset by cuts to a jobs program or anything else. This proposal passed the notoriously gridlocked Senate on a bipartisan vote of 62-37, with fully TEN Republican senators voting in favor of it.

Last week, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (CA) asked Boehner to bring this bipartisan plan up for a vote in the House:

Families across the country have endured hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and wildfires. Federal, state, and local officials have prepared for these natural disasters, responded immediately, and assisted those left to clean up the damage.

In these times of crisis, it is our responsibility in Congress to support local communities and aid in their recovery. Today, the Senate upheld its responsibility; now the House must do the same.

House Republicans are setting a dangerous precedent by requiring that disaster aid be offset, especially when Americans are struggling to rebuild their homes, businesses, and communities. Speaker Boehner must allow a vote on the Senate-passed bipartisan bill without further delay.

IN TWO SENTENCES: The Tea Party extremists controlling the GOP and their obsession with spending cuts are threatening both American jobs and vital aid for disaster victims. It’s time for GOP leaders to stand up to the Tea Party and start working with Democrats to do what’s best for our country instead of trying to satisfy an out-of-touch group of Tea Party extremists.

Troy Davis is dead; the movement continues …Rashad Robinson, ColorOfChange.org

At 11:08 pm Wednesday, the state of Georgia killed Troy Davis. Just before he was executed, Troy maintained his innocence, urged people to dig deeper into the case to find the truth, and said “For those about to take my life, may God have mercy on your souls, may God bless your souls.” It’s a tragic day for Troy, for his family, and for equality, fairness, and justice.

It’s hard to know what to say at a time like this. In this moment, and in the days and weeks before Troy’s execution, we’ve felt all kinds of things — anger, sadness, inspiration, hope and hopelessness. This is a time to mourn and remember Troy, to contemplate the profound loss we’re facing, to send love and support to Troy’s family and friends. It’s incredibly important to take the time to spiritually and emotionally care for Troy’s family and the amazing community that has arisen to support Troy — and it feels hard to muster the energy to do much more than that.

But before he died, Troy told us that this was about more than him — and he called on those of us who have fought against his execution to continue fighting for justice, even if we weren’t successful in saving his life. Now is also an important moment to take stock of what’s brought us to this point — the criminal justice system that allowed this to happen, and the movement we’ve built to fight for Troy and others facing injustice and oppression at the hands of that system.

Race, the criminal justice system, and the death penalty

At every stage of the criminal justice system, Black people and other minorities face inequality and discrimination. We all know about people who’ve been treated unfairly by police or by the courts. When the entire system treats Black people unequally, it means that the death penalty is applied unequally too. Troy Davis’ case underscores the way in which this systemic inequality can lead to a tragic miscarriage of justice.

In most cases, people who’ve been treated unfairly or wrongly convicted have some chance to correct the injustice. People who have been mistreated by the police can sue them. People who are wrongly serving time can be granted new trials, can be released from prison, and are sometimes entitled to compensation. As we all know, the safeguards that can correct abuse by the criminal justice system often fail, and rampant inequality persists. Usually, people can at least keep trying.

But there’s no way to correct a death sentence. If Troy Davis were serving a sentence of life in prison without parole, he could continue to press the legal system to grant him a fair trial — but because the death penalty exists, he will not have that opportunity.

Troy Davis’ case has sparked a national conversation about the death penalty. In the past, much of the debate around the death penalty has focused on the morality of killing people as a legal punishment — a very important question that brings out a lot of strong opinions. But even if we completely leave aside the question whether or not it can ever be right for the government to punish a murderer by killing them, there’s an entirely different debate to be had — whether or not we can have the death penalty and actually avoid the possibility of killing innocent people. In a criminal justice system that routinely misidentifies Black suspects and disproportionately punishes Black people, Black folks are more likely to be wrongfully executed.

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the death penalty has been used to kill innocent people many times. Since 1973, more than 130 people have been released from death row because of evidence that they were wrongly convicted. Troy Davis is one of many people who were executed despite serious questions about their guilt, and he’s called on his supporters to continue working to end the death penalty.

A group of NAACP organizers went to visit Troy in prison yesterday, and NAACP’s Robert Rooks said this about the visit:

For someone that was facing death the very next day, he was just full of life and wanted to spend time talking to the younger staff, the interns, giving them direction and hope and asking them to hold onto God. And he challenged them. He challenged them by saying, “You have a choice. You can either fold up your bags after tomorrow and go home, or you can stand and continue this fight.” He said it doesn’t—it didn’t begin with Troy Davis, and this won’t end if he is executed today. He just asked us all just to continue to fight to end the death penalty, if in fact he’s executed.

A powerful movement

For years, ColorOfChange members have been an important part of a growing movement to stop Troy Davis’ execution. Hundreds of phone calls from ColorOfChange members to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole helped delay Davis’ execution twice. Over the past year, there’s been a huge outpouring of support for Davis from ColorOfChange members — more than 100,000 of us have signed petitions, and we raised more than $30,000 to run radio ads in Georgia calling for justice for Troy.

And we’ve been part of an even bigger movement — NAACP, Amnesty International, National Action Network, Change.org, and others have all been a major part of the fight for Troy Davis, and there are now over close to a million petition signatures overall. Prominent people from all across the political spectrum have spoken out: members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Desmond Tutu, former President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI, former FBI Director William Sessions, former Georgia Republican congressman Bob Barr, and former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Norman Fletcher.

This movement couldn’t stop Davis’ execution — but it’s a movement that won’t die with Troy Davis. There’s no better way to honor Troy’s memory than to keep fighting for justice.

Thanks and Peace,

Until recently, very few consumers had even heard of palm oil—much less understood that the expansion of palm oil plantations is one of the biggest causes of rainforest destruction in the world today.

Most people still have no idea that rainforest destroying palm oil is in roughly 50% of packaged goods sold on grocery store shelves.

Please share the infographic below to spread awareness about the problem with palm oil and help build public demand for sustainable options.

Awareness is the first crucial step to building necessary pressure on corporations like Cargill that will transform how business gets done in the palm oil industry and the fate of Indonesia’s rainforests.

Republicans say NO NO NO

Let me sum up this week for you:

President Obama: JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.
The Republican Party: NO, NO, NO.

President Obama presented his plan. The only plan Republicans have put forward is to say no to President Obama and yes to big corporations calling the shots, undermining the social safety net we pay for with our taxes, and, if you get sick: you’re on your own. In short: their plan is an assault on our values.

Their vision is dangerous – and we’re in danger of it becoming reality if Republicans flip just FOUR Senate seats in 2012. We can’t let that happen.

That’s why the DSCC needs your help to raise $585,000 before Sept. 30 so we can make sure Democrats don’t lose races that we can win. We literally can’t afford to fall short.

Please give $5, $10 or whatever you can give to the DSCC right now. The DSCC has only 10 days to raise $585,000 and fight the GOP’s assault on our values.

Rick Perry calls Social Security a “Ponzi scheme” and Mitt Romney compares it to a criminal enterprise. And now one GOP Congressman is complaining that President Obama’s plan would force him to live on just $400,000 a year.  Once again the GOP just doesn’t understand the challenges Americans are facing today.

2012 will decide whether we focus on creating jobs, like Democrats want, or protecting millionaires and big corporations, like Republicans demand. We can win.  But we need your help.

Please give $5, $10 or whatever you can give to the DSCC right now. The DSCC has only 10 days to raise $585,000 and fight the GOP’s assault on our values.

There are many reasons we’re Democrats. But perhaps one of the most important is this: We know that a strong middle class makes our country stronger.  Thanks for joining me to fight for what we believe in.

Sincerely,

Karen Finney

President Perry? Michael Keegan, People For the American Way

Irrational, delusional, nihilistic or just plain scary — all are valid descriptors for the GOP’s top three Presidential Candidates for 2012.

Can you imagine Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, or Michele Bachmann in the White House next year? One of them WILL be the GOP’s candidate and WILL be running against President Obama. We only have 12 months until the 2012 election  which is why we need your renewed support today to gear up for the fight now.

A generous PFAW donor who knows what a real threat this is has offered to match your gift dollar-for-dollar when you renew with a contribution before midnight Friday, September 30!

You know, People For is on the front lines combating right-wing extremism every day, and each nominee seems more extreme than the next.

  • Mitt Romney recently railed against raising corporate taxes asserting, “Corporations are people!” And he’s appointed Robert Bork  who was famously rejected by the Senate for a Supreme Court seat because we was such a far-right radical — as his chief adviser on judicial nominations! If that’s not a clear signal to both the Radical Religious AND Corporate Right that Romney is willing to do their bidding on judicial nominations and a host of other issues, I don’t know what is.
  • Texas Governor Rick Perry has written that Social Security is unconstitutional and called it an “outrageous lie” and a “Ponzi scheme.” This summer, Perry hosted an exclusionary prayer rally with some of the most bigoted leaders on the Religious Right and he’s such a shill for Big Oil that he said of the BP Oil Spill, “from time to time, there are going to be things that occur that are acts of God that cannot be prevented.”

Renew your membership in People For the American Way with a generous gift today and it will be matched — doubling YOUR impact against whichever of these candidates the Tea Party nominates to challenge the president.

  • Michele Bachmann perhaps more than any other candidate is a product of the Religious Right, and she has certainly done the most to appeal to the Tea Party. Before she was using virtually every breath to accuse the president of “socialism” and completely distort the meaning of the U.S. Constitution, Bachmann was crusading against gay rights saying it would essentially lead to students being encouraged to “try it” and said LGBT people were the victims of sexual identity disorders.

One of these three politicians WILL be the GOP Presidential candidate. Due to this heightened level of extremism, we need the support of all our members today. So don’t miss this chance to have your renewal gift DOUBLED, you only have until midnight on September 30.

Sincerely,
Michael B. Keegan signature
Michael Keegan, President

P.S. Just think, one year from now we are going to be in the frenzied last minutes of the election campaign, and you are going to be seeing and hearing one of these people campaigning nonstop. Help us start getting the message out now by renewing your support for our work by September 30 and your gift will be doubled!
