Bison: More Room to Roam

Bison (National Park Service) As the only national conservation organization that has helped fund bison restoration on tribal lands of the Assiniboine, Gros Venture and Sioux Tribes, Defenders and our supporters are playing a unique role in helping bring North America’s largest land mammal back to the Great Plains.

Last month, we reached an important milestone when Montana officials approved a plan to allow 68 of these magnificent animals — some of the last genetically pure wild bison in America — to be moved to tribal lands at Fort Peck and Fort Belknap Indian Reservations.

These bison — which might have otherwise faced slaughter — will soon have more space to roam as new tribal conservation herds.

Speak out now to thank Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer for helping move this plan forward — and to urge him to continue efforts to ensure that America’s wild bison have more room to roam.

Seeking Safety for PanthersFlorida panther (USFWS)Four decades ago, there were as few as 20 Florida panthersleft in the wild. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, biologists estimate their population at 100-160 — a number that has slowly grown, but is still precariously low.Habitat loss and fragmentation are taking a toll on these rare cats as development continues in South Florida. Increased conflicts with people and vehicle collisions pose grave threats to their recovery. That’s why Defenders and our partners are working with ranchers and state and local officials to protect these panthers — and ensure they continue to have room to roam.Learn how Defenders is helping ranchers and panthers coexist.Learn more about how technology is helping Florida panthers — and drivers.Read how Defenders Florida Representative Elizabeth Fleming was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a panther — and helped secure a slow-zone for wildlife on a busy highway.

No, Mitt Romney, We’re Not Attacking Capitalism … the Progress Report

No, Mitt Romney, We’re Not Attacking Capitalism

By ThinkProgress War Room on Jan 13, 2012 at 5:21 pm

We Want an Economy That Works for Everyone, Not Just the Privileged Few

The klieg lights have been burning hot on Mitt Romney’s record as a rapacious corporate raider who amassed a quarter-billion fortune by bankrupting companies and laying off thousands of Americans. Here’s how Center for American Progress Chairman John Podesta summed it up:

You know, I don’t think they’re putting capitalism on trial or the free market on trial or even private equity on trial. Private equity can build companies, and it may make appropriate investments.

The critique against Romney, really, is the way, under his leadership, Bain Capital operated, in the fact that so many companies went bankrupt under his tenure. I think 22 percent of the investments went bankrupt. They put a lot of people out of work, shipped a lot of jobs overseas, took a lot of federal money and then – and then saw those companies go belly-up.

So I think that’s – that’s a fair – it’s at least fair to kind of review his record, and I think that Romney hasn’t handled it very well by suggesting that a review of how he personally operated at Bain Capital or how Bain Capital operated under his leadership, you know, is an attack on the whole free enterprise system. I don’t think it is.

Romney and his campaign accused critics of Wall Street excesses and his record at Bain Capital of merely being guilty of “envy,” but most of his responses have focused on accusing critics of being anti-capitalist, anti-American, sacrilegious, and even socialist:

Romney: You know, I think it’s about envy. I think it’s about class warfare. When you have a president encouraging the idea of dividing America based on the 99 percent versus one percent — and those people who have been most successful will be in the one percent — you have opened up a whole new wave of approach in this country which is entirely inconsistent with the concept of one nation under God.

Romney: We’ve understood for a long time that the Obama people would come after free enterprise.

Romney: President Obama wants to put free enterprise on trial. In the last few days, we have seen some desperate Republicans join forces with him. This is such a mistake for our Party and for our nation. This country already has a leader who divides us with the bitter politics of envy. We must offer an alternative vision. I stand ready to lead us down a different path, where we are lifted up by our desire to succeed, not dragged down by a resentment of success. In these difficult times, we cannot abandon the core values that define us as unique — We are One Nation, Under God.

Make no mistake, in this campaign, I will offer the American ideals of economic freedom a clear and unapologetic defense.

Top Romney surrogate John Sununu: I think the socialist attacks you’re getting against Mitt Romney by opponents will come back to hurt them.

Instead of an economy that only works for the privileged few, progressive want to bring back an economy that works for everyone — the kind of economy with a strong middle class that made America great. President Obama eloquently described the progressive vision for America in his landmark speech in Kansas:

But, Osawatomie, this is not just another political debate. This is the defining issue of our time. This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and for all those who are fighting to get into the middle class. Because what’s at stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, secure their retirement.

Now, in the midst of this debate, there are some who seem to be suffering from a kind of collective amnesia. After all that’s happened, after the worst economic crisis, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, they want to return to the same practices that got us into this mess. In fact, they want to go back to the same policies that stacked the deck against middle-class Americans for way too many years. And their philosophy is simple: We are better off when everybody is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules.

I am here to say they are wrong. (Applause.) I’m here in Kansas to reaffirm my deep conviction that we’re greater together than we are on our own. I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, when everyone plays by the same rules. (Applause.) These aren’t Democratic values or Republican values. These aren’t 1 percent values or 99 percent values. They’re American values. And we have to reclaim them. (Applause.)

IN ONE SENTENCE: Wanting an economy that works for everyone — not just the privileged few — isn’t called socialism; it’s called America.

Fox’s Bolling Is Wildly Wrong About Obama Asking Congress For Authority To Consolidate Agencies
Fox News’ Eric Bolling falsely asserted that President Obama is “usurping Congress for more executive privilege” in seeking the authority to consolidate federal agencies. In fact, Obama is requesting this authority from Congress, and presidents from Franklin Roosevelt through Ronald Reagan had the same authority — to fast-track congressional votes on executive-branch consolidation proposals from the president. Tell the AIBA: Don’t force female Olympic boxers to compete in miniskirts
Sign the Petition

Women’s boxing will make its debut at this year’s Olympic Games in London — a huge victory for female boxers who have fought for years to be taken seriously. But now it seems their participation will come with an outrageous catch: female boxers might be required to wear miniskirts in the ring.

The Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) is reportedly considering the new dress code because it thinks skirts will make the female athletes look “elegant” and help “distinguish” them from their male counterparts.

Elizabeth Plank, an amateur boxer based in London, is petitioning the AIBA to abandon the miniskirt regulation. Click here to sign Elizabeth’s petition right now.

Elizabeth says, “The idea that female boxers should be made to wear skirts reduces these skilled athletes to sex objects. It undermines the respect they have long fought for.” Worse, competing in unfamiliar clothing could even negatively impact the boxers’ performances.

And Elizabeth isn’t the only boxer speaking out against the proposed dress code. When asked about the policy, three-time world champion Katie Taylor says, “I don’t even wear miniskirts on a night out, so I definitely won’t be wearing miniskirts in the ring.”

Fortunately, the AIBA will be considering public opinion and feedback from the boxing world before making its final decision next week. That means if enough people sign Elizabeth’s petition, you can force the AIBA to abandon the proposed dress code for good.

Click here to sign Elizabeth’s campaign calling on the AIBA to abandon its sexist plans to require female boxers to wear miniskirts in the ring.

Thanks for being a change-maker,

What I’m Reading … Guy Cecil

Quarterly fundraising numbers are trickling in, and Elizabeth Warren put up a MASSIVE number, thanks in large part to the small donors who are making a big difference in our fight to keep the Senate blue. We expect more good numbers in the coming days from our other candidates. And just in time, as Tea Party forces unenthused by Mitt Romney turn their energy toward taking the Senate. Meanwhile, Heidi Heitkamp is giving North Dakota Republicans heartburn – for good reason.

Please do me a favor and share these links with your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter. While you’re at it, make sure you follow @DSCC and my own account, @guycecil, where I talk about Senate races, reality TV, and quite possibly the only thing more bizarre than reality TV – the 2012 Republican presidential primary.

You Did This: Democrats Trounce Republicans in Grassroots Donations!
Here’s a good look at how important all of those $10 and $25 donations are to keeping the Senate blue. Recently released numbers show that the DSCC has seen a whopping 46% jump in small donations since the last election cycle – from $9.1 million to $13.4 million. In the same timeframe, Republicans have seen their small donations DROP 31%. It proves that every little bit helps and will help preserve the Democratic majority in 2012. Read more »

MONSTER Quarter from Elizabeth Warren
Elizabeth Warren’s candidacy has caught fire! Warren reported an astonishing $5.7 million raised during the final quarter of 2011, compared with only $3.2 million raised by Republican Sen. Scott Brown. And much of the support is from local grassroots donors, with about 23,000 Bay Staters contributing, and an average gift of $64. Warren’s message of leveling the playing field for middle class American families has clearly caught on. Sen. Brown has got to be nervous. Read more »

Tea Partiers Turn Attention to Taking Senate
The Democratic advantage in small donations couldn’t come at a better time. Tea Partiers – who are decidedly unenthusiastic about Mitt Romney’s candidacy – are turning their attention to a bigger prize – gaining control of the Senate. Tim Dake of the Wisconsin Grandsons of Liberty might sum it up best: “There is no way on earth I’d campaign for Romney,” he said. “I will put all of my efforts into getting a conservative U.S. senator instead.” If their plan works, and Republicans gain 4 seats, they have total control of Congress. We’re fighting every day to make sure that doesn’t happen. Read more »

Republicans Running Scared in North Dakota
In an editorial, the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead pointed out this week that Republican actions suggest that they are worried about Democratic Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp. And they should be. According to the Forum, Heitkamp is a formidable campaigner who “can count on a deep reservoir of good will among North Dakotans” given her strong leadership during two terms as attorney general. “Given Heitkamp’s record of service in her state … it will be a tall order for [Republicans] to characterize her as putting the interests of Washington ahead of North Dakota,” the editorial concluded. Exactly right. Read more »

topical Tuesday &some News

just another rant …

The change that 53% of us voted for is again at risk. For three years the change and progress needed to get America/Americans back on track has suffered and though folks in the Media fail to convey it sufficiently, we can blame our lack of progress stopped, blocked, stalled, scaled back and slowed down by the Teapublican Political Party. Obvious statement right yet, folks still seem to be oblivious.

You can turn it to just about any channel and hear how the Independent vote is up for grabs. Most pundit’s strategists and politicians say it is about the economy and the terrible jobs numbers but fail to tell the viewer in detail what the party of NO have done to stand in the way of progress. I do believe if you are going to call yourself a reporter then do your job and give viewers both sides of the story otherwise you are a partisan hack. I find it hard to believe anyone has to stop think or wonder which Teapublican candidate running for President should even get a 2nd look much less bat around the possibility of giving up women’s , voter, worker, gay or our children’s right to an education to them. I am not that naïve but it really is simple; we need a better Congress that will work with the President. It is up to those who do lean left of center to reach out to our fellow independents to keep them informed. It is important to challenge the crap coming out that clearly are lies, on the edge or overtly reflect a nasty rhetoric often spewing fear hate and discrimination. It is a call to action of all those who believe in our Constitution in every way; welcomes everyone that believe in that saying We the People, the 14th Amendment and equality for All people regardless of the race, creed, religious or gender preference. It is at a moment like this that begs us all to let those who practice exclusion hears from those who believe in helping our fellow man. The fight against income inequality is on.

I don’t know about you but I tend to have a stash of sayings, proverbs, and or clichés in the back of my mind when patience calmness and reflection is needed when disagreeable rhetoric is flying my way. I give President Obama some major props for being calm cool collected as always. I appreciate and love those traits and if you are paying attention not one Teapublican running for President has yet to behave or display an even-tempered manner. I won’t be voting right of center period but if you are looking for things to compare and contrast the stark differences in tone verbiage and representation you can vision a moment when a country wanting to provoke war is pushing it. I know who I would trust how about you.

I believe … Sometimes, the needs of the many do outweigh the needs of the few. Yes, the current ugly rhetoric coming from those leaning right is meant to hurt conquer & divide us. It is also clear that in this election year when life amongst Americans is changing and not in a good way only to have gotten worse since the 2010 midterm elections though President Obama has moved us forward despite conservatives almost all by himself, Teapublican Governors, and their members of Congress keep doing their best to undermine it all. At first, Teapublican Governors were throwing coded language at those mostly in protected classes. Thus, the need to recite the saying “When the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” is an important statement for me right about now. The Fact that some on Wall Street made big bets against or in spite of an under regulated inefficient supposedly “free enterprise” system seemingly set up against the consumer proved to me that they believe themselves to be above the call and refuse to, consider the needs of the many and continue to fight for the few.

If you were unfortunate enough to have been a victim of the 2008 financial collapse, invested in it directly maybe your 401k, or are a part of the housing debacle, you probably suffered tremendously. Yes, the government had to step in and up to help All Americans because unfortunately it was clear “the market” was not going to correct itself- the bets – the casino shut itself down. The economic collapse was an opportunity to see to “the needs of the many” change the failed ways that the house of Bush apparently was handling things and move All Americans into the 21st Century. Yet, McConnell and his comrades decided to put their heads down and fight for the rights of the 1% oh those job creators need our help repeatedly. I don’t know about you but I am getting tired of this nonsense.

What Wall Street did was take tax payer money and then shit on us on so many levels

I admit it; I am biased so any negative comments about President Obama get a second or third scan. I gotta say listening, reading and hearing comments coming from the likes of a matt damon, harry belafonte or groups the msm calls special interest though President Obama, having taken great first steps toward change state, I guess, that he has not gone far enough. It is my contention that we vote for a President not a puppet, dictator or king so the notion that he had a mandate or needs to sedate or fulfill the promises he made to some special interest groups during his campaign is beyond ridiculous let alone that stupid comment about President Obama being morally corrupt. First, just as many special interest groups are very happy, supportive and plan to express that by voting for Barack Obama for a second term. Second, all you have to do is compare and contrast the facts and President Obama is definitely putting “the needs of the many before the needs of the few; thankfully so. While Independents seem to be holding out they should decide what side of history do they want to be remembered taking.

I think the negative comments are becoming bold, louder and more frequent but they are coming from the right, the more extreme side of our society certainly special in their own way… have chosen to go extreme go right of center and in some cases sound very dangerous but hey that is just my take. The whole class warfare the 99% V 1% the poor V the Rich. I say the battle is about how and not allowing a Black man govern in the White House again let alone the other awful code words being used to induce fear into Americans. I say the Black Man as President Thing who btw has gotten more things done then previous Presidents cannot and should not be forced back into that genie bottle though some Teapublicans in Congress and their constituents seem to want to. FYI, governing for the greater good has nothing to do with colour if the mind and heart are for ALL Americans not a select few. Though the house of Bush created 3million jobs, the fact is that shameful number took him 8yrs to accomplish. I have to wonder WTH are people beating up/down President Obama when the last guy obviously skated. We can also blame the Media for the selective and misinformation they all seem to provide viewers what with ratings seemingly more important than giving all angles of a story or giving a guest an opportunity to rebut the opinions of the host or commentator.

Change takes time… It will take a Congress with courage to create and pass laws that should be for the greater good that covers all Americans.

Sometimes, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
