Committed to Keeping a Democratic Majority in the Senate

2012 – Year of the Woman
While Rush Limbaugh and the Republicans wage a war on women that aims to roll back healthcare coverage and block access to contraception, Democrats are committed to stopping them in their tracks. As our new video declares, Democrats believe it’s time to end the culture wars and get back to work for the middle class. It’s quite a stark contrast to Limbaugh and his Grand Old Party.

In MA, Scott Brown Runs From His Anti-Women Blunt-Brown Amendment

Scott Brown is trying to run away from his support of his amendment that would have blocked access to basic health care services, while at the same time attempting to blame Elizabeth Warren for the political uproar around his extreme measure. The Warren campaign said it best – “He paid for a radio ad, wrote a newspaper column, taped a video, and did numerous interviews all talking about his legislation that threatens women’s healthcare. Now that people are outraged, he wants to change the subject, claiming he’s focusing on job creation.”

GOP Fears Long Primary Will Cost Them Senate
Republicans have long seen 2012 as a chance to win back the White House and the Senate. But now, Republicans are worried that their long, drawn-0ut, nasty presidential primary will cost them the opportunity to expand power in Washington, according to The Hill. What’s bad news for Republicans is good news for Democrats. “In every primary, we’ve seen just how disappointed Republicans are in their candidates.  The longer the Republican primary goes, the longer we have to continue to build,” said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.

Washington Post: Among Female Voters, Republicans Handing Democrats an “Enormous Advantage this Fall”

Last week, the Washington Post reported that women want to see Democrats in control of Congress by an astounding fifteen point margin! The numbers reflect the growing grievances among female voters over Republicans’ extreme assault on women’s health care.

Republican House of Scandal

Despite Republican Speaker Boehner and Leader Eric Cantor’s supposed “zero tolerance” on ethics transgressions, House Republicans are engaging in a culture of corruption.

The integrity of House Republicans has been riddled with IRS, FBI, and grand jury investigations. In just the last year, these scandals have come to light:

September 2011: Rep. Joe Walsh may owe more than $100,000 in child support payments to his ex-wife and three children.

January 2012: House Republican fundraising chief, Rep. Vern Buchanan, is under multiple ethics investigations for what has been termed an “extensive and ongoing scheme” to reimburse his employees for contributing to Buchanan’s congressional campaign.

February 2012: The FBI is potentially investigating Rep. Michael Grimm for extorting a rabbi and his followers into donating as much as $500,000 to his congressional campaign.

BLOCKADE: The GOP’s Unending Effort to Block Obama’s Nominees

By ThinkProgress War Room on Mar 12, 2012 at 5:49 pm

GOP Obstructionism, By the Numbers

It’s no secret that Republicans have done everything in their power to throw up road blocks for President Obama at every turn. And nowhere is their power to block the president greater than it is in the Senate, where Republicans have effectively imposed a blockade on the president’s nominees for dozens of seats on the federal judiciary.

It is clear from recent cases that no matter the issue—health care, immigration, environment, marriage equality, consumer protections, ethics—the judiciary will continue to make decisions that affect the lives of hardworking Americans as well as the success of the progressive legislative agenda. Every issue progressives fight for ends up in the courts. If you’re a progressive and you care about progressive issues, who gets a lifetime appointment to the federal courts should matter to you.

Conservatives know the courts matter, which is why they are doing everything in their power to stop the president from appointing more judges.

Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that Senate Democrats had had enough. Reid threw down the gauntlet and announced that he was filing cloture petitions (the procedural maneuver needed to halt a filibuster in the Senate) on an unprecedented 17 judicial nominees.

Now it’s up to Republicans to choose whether they will finally allow votes on these nominees right away or whether they will instead waste hundreds of hours of the Senate’s time on procedural votes.

Here’s the rundown.

Of the 22 judicial nominees currently awaiting an up-or-down vote in the Senate thanks to unprecedented Republican obstructionism:

  • 10 were approved unanimously by both Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee
  • 6 received just one “no” vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee
  • 13 are from states with a Republican Senator who supports their nomination
  • 11 would fill “emergency” vacancies, where the lack of a sufficient number of judges to hear cases is preventing courts from handling their caseloads — delaying or effectively denying the public access to the justice system.
  • 9 are women
  • 9 are minorities

Senate Republicans have imposed record wait times on President Obama’s nominees — delays more than FOUR TIMES longer than judicial nominees experienced under President George W. Bush:

More than 160 MILLION Americans live in a community with a courtroom vacancy – with the total number of vacancies now exceeding 80 because of unprecedented Republican obstructionism.

IN ONE SENTENCE: Americans don’t like a system where corporations and the wealthy have better access and a different set of rules to play by than everybody else, so it’s time to for Republicans to end their blockade so we can have a court system that works fairly for everyone and not just the privileged few.

Honoring International Women’s Day by Continuing to Fight for Women’s Health

Honoring International Women’s Day by Continuing to Fight for Women’s Health

The threats to women’s health care are very real, and they are ongoing growing.  We saw it on a panel on birth control in the House – that didn’t include any woman.  We saw it in a young woman being called  horrible names for telling the story of a friend in need. We see it in Republican efforts to allow a woman’s employer to dictate her access to birth control, and we are seeing it in state laws all across the country aimed at stripping women of  their rights and so much more.

To commemorate International Women’s Day, I gave  a speech on the Senate floor to remind women and men across the country that the battle over women’s health and family planning decisions is ongoing, and that we must remain vigilant against these attacks. It is important to celebrate gains women have made, but to keep in mind that these gains must continue to be defended.  Last week, one woman brave enough to come forward and give voice to the importance of birth control was targeted.  First,  her story of a friend’s battle with ovarian cancer was purposefully left out of a House hearing on the matter and then, as we have all heard, she was scorned and  ridiculed by a right wing pundit.  It was a galvanizing and eye-opening moment for millions of women across the country. It was a reminder that there are some who still see women as easy targets. The attacks on women’s rights are not   just taking place here in Washington D.C. In every state across the country, legislatures bent on putting politics  between women and their care are undoing years of work.  We need to do everything in our power to ensure that this progress is not reversed, and unite to  fight against attacks from Republicans.                        -                          Read more

Read a letter I sent to House Speaker JohnBoehner Thursday, calling on him to rescind his pledge to push forward with efforts to  restrict women’s access to  contraception after the Blunt amendment was defeated in the Senate. The letter was signed by all 12 Democratic women  Senators.

Putting Our Nation’s Heroes to  Work

In February, I had a great opportunityto tour General Plastics in Tacoma and to host a roundtable event focused on veterans employment.  The event, which was heldat General Plastics, an aerospace manufacturing company, highlighted the success of public-private partnerships, such as the one between General Plastics and Clover Park Technical College. That program promotes veteran training and employment in Washington’s growing  aerospace industry. These public-private partnerships are the next step in getting our nation’s veterans back to work.   Read more about public-private partnerships.

I was also pleased to announce that as part of my VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, which was enacted last November, an expanded Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC)  is now available to businesses, and certain tax-exempt organizations, that hire eligible unemployed veterans. The credit can be as high as $9,600 per veteran for for-profit employers or up to $6,240 fortax-exempt organizations. Employers who hire veterans with service-related disabilities may be eligible for the  maximum credit. The law allows employers one tax credit per eligible veteran hired. This is another incentive for Washington  state businesses to help put our  state’s veterans back to work. We all know our veterans have the leadership skills, drive, and discipline to  succeed in the workplace, and now businesses have one more reason to bring them on board. I am so pleased to have been able to help pass this bill, and I hope that our state’s businesses  immediately begin to take advantage of this tax credit and the tremendous talents of our veterans.  Read more about the tax credits available to businesses that hire veterans.

Bringing Our Troops Home from Afghanistan

This week, I joined a bipartisan group of 24 Senators in a letter calling on President Obama to bring American combat forces home from Afghanistan.  We  simply cannot afford more years of elevated troop levels in Afghanistan. We are  spending roughly $10 billion in Afghanistaneach month at a time when we’re making tough sacrifices at home. Our troops and their families have made unimaginable  sacrifices during the past ten years of war  in Afghanistan.  Over 1,900 American  troops have been killed and over 14,300 have been wounded. Thousands more return home with invisible wounds that will make  it difficult to ever again enjoy life the       way they did before the war. It is time to  bring our troops home.  Read  the full text of the letter we sent to the President.
