MOBILIZE THE EARTH

2012  is off to a great start for Earth Day Network. With your support and  participation, we have been able to mobilize people around the world and around  the corner to take action to protect the environment on Earth Day and beyond.

But to take it over the finish line, we need more help.

We’re working with thousands  of event organizers to Mobilize the Earth™ on April 22. In  particular, the overwhelmingly positive response we’re seeing in the Middle  East and India is absolutely incredible. From community clean-ups and tree  plantings to rallies and educational events, Earth Day Network and its partners  are making a real difference in the daily lives of people all over the world.

In  the U.S. this year, Earth Day Network was instrumental in creating the  Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools program, the first comprehensive  federal green schools program. Every day, we’re closer to our goal of greening  America’s schools within a generation and making sure every child is not only  environmentally literate but has a healthy learning environment and a fresh, nutritious  lunch.

We’re  also making sure that politicians and government officials will be in  attendance at 1,000 local Earth Day events in all 50 U.S. states – to guarantee  that our voices are heard. And we’re putting on Earth Day 2012’s massive  flagship event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where hundreds of  thousands of people will call for environmental issues to become a top  priority.

Your donations make all of this possible.

This is a critical  time for Earth Day Network. We need your help today to truly Mobilize the  Earth for Earth Day 2012 and to continue our work safeguarding the air and  water in our communities, ensuring every child has the opportunity to attend a  healthy school, protecting biodiversity and building environmental democracy  around the globe.

Act now to support these vital campaigns.

Together,  we’ll Mobilize the Earth and ensure a sustainable future for our children.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Rogers, President   Earth Day Network

the Progress Report –Don’t forget Santorum’s top 10 hits on Romney

The Primary Is Over, But These Attacks Will Live On

Rick Santorum announced that he was suspending his campaign, effectively handing the Republican nomination over to Mitt Romney.  A top aide to the former Pennsylvania senator told reporters that Santorum and Romney agreed to meet in the near future, and Romney sent out a press release praising his opponent as “an important voice in our party and in the nation.”

But as Romney pivots to the general election with Santorum’s help, it’s important to remember that the former rival leveled some serious charges against the presumed nominee that should not be forgotten.

Here are Santorum’s top 10 hits on Romney:

1. LIAR: “If [Romney's health care] policy is bad, the policy is bad. And a bad policy is one thing. But lying to the American people is something else.” [National Journal]

2. “ULTIMATE FLIP-FLOPPER:” “He glosses over and doesn’t even tell the truth. … Here is a guy who is the ultimate flip-flopper running for president, and he’s attacking me for not being principled? That doesn’t wash.” [Examiner]

3. ETCH A SKETCH CANDIDATE: “One of Governor Romney’s aides today on television said that Governor Romney, after he wins the primaries, will be like an [Etch A Sketch] — you take whatever he said and you can shake it up and it will be gone, and he’s going to draw a whole new picture for the general election.” [Washington Post]

4. MIGHT AS WELL RE-ELECT OBAMA: “You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there. If they’re going to be a little different,we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future.” [AP]

5. OBAMACARE: “He created the blueprint for Obamacare and advocated for exactly what Obamacare is, which is a mandated health insurance program…it is exactly the Massachusetts health care plan. …He is uniquely disqualified.” [MSNBC]

6. “WORST REPUBLICAN IN THE COUNTRY”: “Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama.” [NBC]

7. “WEAK CANDIDATE:” “We can’t nominate such a weak candidate. I’d love to be able to get one-on-one with Gov. Romney and expose the record that would be the weakest record we could possibly put up against Barack Obama.” [Huffington Post]

8. “WALL STREET FINANCIER:” “I heard Governor Romney here called me an economic lightweight because I wasn’t a Wall Street financier like he was. Do you really believe this country wants to elect a Wall Street financier as the president of the United States? Do you think that’s the experience that we need? Someone who’s going to take and look after as he did his friends on Wall Street and bail them out at the expense of Main Street America.” [ABC]

9. BUSINESS EXPERIENCE DOESN’T MATTER: “Running a business is not the sameas being president of the United States.” [CNN]

10. BAILOUT HYPOCRISY: “Governor Romney supported the bailout of Wall Street and decided not to support the bailout of Detroit. [AP]

the Affordable Care Act helps Women and their Families

I bet you get calls, emails, or texts from friends and relatives all the time. But isn’t it nice to get something from them in the mail?

Here’s a way you can put something meaningful in your friends’ mailboxes, in much less time than it takes to sit down and write a letter.

For the Women’s Week of Action, people are sending postcards to their friends and family about some of the ways that the Affordable Care Act helps women.

Can you send an “Our health, our vote” postcard — or a few — about the Affordable Care Act to people you know?

It won’t cost you a stamp, or a trip to the post office. You can do it all from the site. Just click the link, pick one of three messages that are ready to be plugged into your postcard, enter your friend’s address, and hit send. It takes less than two minutes.

When your friend sees that postcard among their junk mail and bills, they might just smile and feel happy to have gotten some mail from you.

And it’ll get them thinking about how far we’ve come with health reform, and how many women are going to be living healthier lives thanks to having more access to preventive care, or not losing coverage for themselves or their kids because of a pre-existing condition — to name a thing or two.

It’s a small gesture that takes no time at all. But the more people know about what health care reform actually does, the more they care about protecting it.

And if they’re not already involved in this campaign, that postcard will make them think about joining you.

So send some postcards today, and help get the word out on women’s health for the week of action:

USA.gov … Beware of Skin Lotions Tainted with Mercury

Beware of Skin Lotions Tainted With Mercury

Some skin lotions and antiseptic soaps claim to clean and lighten skin while removing freckles and wrinkles. Instead, these illegally imported cosmetic products make consumers ill from exposure to high levels of mercury.

The U.S. Government is warning consumers about these products after dozens of people in at least seven states were diagnosed with mercury poisoning. Victims include a woman in California who was hospitalized after using an unlabeled skin lotion for three years. Several members of her family also had high levels of mercury in their bodies, even though they didn’t use the lotion.

“Exposure to mercury can damage your kidneys and nervous system. It also interferes with brain development in unborn babies and very young children,” said Gloria Sánchez-Contreras, a spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration.

See the names and photos of some of the illegal products.

Immigrants Are at High Risk

The FDA has identified dozens of products that contain high levels of mercury, and has taken steps to deny shipments of these products into the United States. However, many of these lotions and soaps are brought into the country by mail or by international travelers. Once here, they often end up on store shelves that cater to immigrants, including Hispanics, Asians, Africans and people from the Middle East.

People who buy these products are not putting only their own health at risk, small children can also be exposed to mercury by breathing in the vapors of a skin lotion or by touching someone who has used the cream and then putting their fingers in their mouth. “That’s why it’s so important for consumers and sellers to know about the dangers of possible mercury poisoning associated with the use of or exposure to these skin products,” said Sánchez-Contreras.

“That’s why it’s so important for consumers and sellers to know about the dangers of possible mercury poisoning associated with the use of or exposure to these skin products,” said Sánchez-Contreras.

How to Avoid These Products

The FDA prohibits the use of mercury in skin lotions and cosmetic soaps manufactured abroad. To avoid skin lightening and anti-aging products tainted with mercury, stay away from products that:

  • Do not clearly list ingredients on the label.
  • Include the words “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” “mercurio,” or “mercury” in their labels.
  • Have labels written in other languages unless they also include a clear description in English.

What to Do If Exposed to Mercury

Be alert for signs of mercury poisoning, which include irritability, changes in vision and hearing, memory loss, depression and numbness in the hands, feet or mouth. If you suspect you have been using products tainted with mercury, stop using them immediately and do the following:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly as well as any other part of the body that might have come into contact with the product.
  • Contact your doctor or health clinic.
  • If you have questions call the National Capital Poison Center at 1 (800) 222-1222.

You can also report the adverse effects of any drug or product on the FDA.gov website or by calling (800) 332-1088.

BBG Communications and BBG Global offices are located in San Diego, CA. They provide a  variety of telecommunication services such as digital lines, high speed Internet, Intranet, public telephony, teleauditor, worldwide long  distance calling, and zero plus calling at credit card only payphone  stations Germany and other countries. BBG Global’s website owns and  operates 350,000 pay phones in airports, train stations, and hotels in  more than 30 countries.

Reports are that the cost of using BBG  Communications has been a problem for quite some time. Now, US troops  have decided to fight back. Americans must join in and demand justice  for all who have been affected; we can do this.

When Specialist  Reynald Matias was heading to Afghanistan with his Army unit late last  year, their chartered flight stopped to refuel at Leipzig-halle Airport  in Germany.During a brief layover, he called his wife in Tacoma,  Wash.,using his debit card on a pay phone in the terminal’s troops-only transit lounge. His wife, Crystal, asked, “What are they charging you?”   He did not know, so she told him to hang up. A few days  later she got   the answer: $51 for what she estimated was a 2minute call. “Military pay  isn’t up there, “she said. “It really hurt us.” Another Soldier,  Sgt.Corder, said he was billed $41 last year for a 3-second call  in which he left a message on the family’s answering machine. The  Sargent’s lawsuit was first written about last fall by Army Times and newspapers in Texas.
It is time for BBG Communications & BBG Global to stop taking  advantage American Soldiers who are already under such stress fighting  in defense of the U.S. Now, their families are subjected to financial  distress; this is completely unacceptable. Complaints from service  members have reached the United States Transportation Command and the  Leipzig airport.

However, press officers state they have no control over the pay phones.
It is time for Americans to Stand with & Speak Up for our Troops, who have taken an oath to support and defend  the U.S. with their lives..

An Ex-Hooker's Letter to her Younger Self

Dear twenty-year old Stella,

Work hard on learning to ask for help.  It's the only way you'll ever  break free.  No one ever does anything alone.  You don't have to.

You'll learn how to make the men happy.  The happier they are the nicer they treat you.  You'll get very good at being a hooker.  But when the Johns say "baby you were born for this" that doesn't mean its true.
