My mom, Dawn Hochsprung, was the principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  She was murdered almost a year ago today, and there’s nothing anyone can do to bring her back.As painful as this anniversary is, I’m also grateful to have joined this movement of millions of Americans like you who are standing up for common-sense gun laws.  And I want to take a moment to thank you for your commitment to passing stronger gun laws so others don’t have to experience what my family has been through.Today, I’m changing my profile picture to the image below. It’s a show of solidarity with supporters around the country, and it will remind our friends and families that we’re serious about making meaningful changes to our nation’s broken gun laws. Please join me, and stand with supporters around the country by updating your profile picture on Facebook and Twitter:

It’s because of people like you that we’ve seen so much progress on this issue in the last year.  But this fight isn’t over, and changing your Facebook photo is a simple way to show your friends and family that you’re in it for the long haul.

Change your profile photo –  for the 26 children and educators, including my mom, who were killed one year ago, and for the 33 Americans who are murdered with guns every single day:

And if you ever feel disheartened by the politics in Washington around this issue, think of my mom and all the people we’re doing this for. We can’t give up before we pass the common-sense laws that will make us all safer.

Thank you,

Erica Lafferty

    • thanks for taking the time to comment, though I don’t agree with you whatsoever … just on the facts. This post is from a relative of a Newtown victim, who obviously is in this for the long haul. I believe in Universal background checks for all, among other things …and to think anyone is outlawing your right to a gun is just stupid and absurd. I think if you want a gun you should pass tests just like we have to for a car – Are you equipped to handle it can you use it and if so show an expert you have no intention of malice when or if given a passing grade

      • First, your use of poll tax is wrong … we have free will to buy/shoot a gun or a drive a car. People of Colour fought died and died some more to gain the right to vote, only to face poll taxes to have the opportunity. I don’t want to take your gun away unless you have all the characteristics of the last few who tried or were able to complete their mass massacres. I think killing for thrills gang violence etc. happen via hand guns …stolen and sometimes transferred from state to state and permits s/b like residencies qualifications . I don’t know why it should be free? a gun kills .. that is what it’s for nothing else so why should the cert/training be free? I took drivers ed and pay for a car/ins to have a license& access to public roads by showing that I can handle the car etc that in turn pays for roads/taxes buses etc. A drivers are unpredictable just like those who carry guns, yet, think of all the hoops we jump through to keep the right to drive

      • In practice your argument means that a responsible citizen who has to live in a bad neighborhood or work a late shift delivery job has no right to self defense while someone like Mitt Romney does.

      • Actually, no matter what I write you will be on the opposite side.I am saying “responsible citizens” shouldn’t mind going through UBC the others will not slip thru cracks bcuz mental illness records, felonies etc. will be caught. The whole chain of players and reactors need change! Stand your ground needs to end or be changed to reflect the population. I prefer police shoot to stop not kill, I want SQF to include white folks too, I think all police officers in this country need re-training and if those Sheriff’s who seem to be on the side of guns without reform, they need to hire more deputies and require them to go into “bad neighborhoods – seems odd to me that cops don’t mind cop killing bullets or guns

      • Sigh … while things are tough, I don’t live in the UK or a dictatorship btw -the problem is the NRA is only 5million strong and a do nothing Congress, who seem more willing to ruin PBO than doing their jobs. In 1994, Congress added a background check system to strengthen our existing laws to keep guns out of the hands of felons, drug abusers, and the mentally ill.
In 2004, Congress let the assault weapons ban expire. It is time to recognize and change the flaws in the background check system that have been exposed again and again over the years, with massacres. If not now when, is the question. Why is it acceptable that 20 kids/6teachers were killed , why columbine why the dc killer and yes the 2nd Amendment says a well “regulated Militia” We don’t need Militia’s ..right?
