Progressive Radio Seattle
We had a famous local radio guest at our last Progressive Radio Seattle meeting! Following is the response from a Team member who couldn’t be there that I wanted to share:
“Hi. What interesting developments! I’m glad there are radio professionals who feel that broadcast radio is not doomed to irrelevance. My sense is that talk radio can be a means to build community and should be cultivated.
The problem is return on capital. There may not be enough profit potential to entice investors whose only interest is making more (and more) money, but there could be “social returns” that would stimulate donations and memberships from the community.
This means that there is an opening for alternative institutions based on democratic principles. We just need to frame the possibilities correctly, articulate institutional designs, and organize!” – PH, Seattle

just another rant …
Is it just me or has the entertainment media crossed the line?
I don’t know maybe its spring sweeps or maybe they just love to shock folks, some seem to be preoccupied with ratings, a lot just don’t care and all are exploiting a whole lot of entertainment personalities. There was a time when so-called celebs were protected… now the whole idea of being a public figure means your kids, though minors are up for grabs…
I have a problem with it … what about their children or their lives loves and living arrangements
Yes, I admit that I tune into reality TV or gossip shows sometimes to hear whom is dating whom, who the next sexiest guy is. I even watched j and k+8 until the media exposed too much info and quit, but watching entertainers act out or the pap’s be disrespectful and engage in dangerous behavior while boating, walking, drinking or driving was bad enough now reality TV is engaged in some sort of contest … fighting to keep their numbers up … it’s disgusting. We have TV interviews that can potentially or do hurt the families of reckless celebs and then there is the digging to get the story… usually personal and will definitely hurt not only the celeb but also family, friends and the fallout great…
Reality TV and gossip shows are big moneymakers … and it’s sad
We all might want to know … some so-called reporters dive in headfirst to say… “You know, I got to ask this question”…
What happened to the right to privacy?
Maybe decide the story isn’t worth the hurt and pain it might cause the children in the future.

Steph and the Mooks - KLAY AM 1180 has changed its schedule and is now airing Stephanie Miller ”live” 6:00 – 9:00 AM. According to Bruce of KLAY, Stephanie prefers to air during the live show time slot because they get listeners calling into her show.
Thom Hartmann is still airing on KLAY AM 1180, 4:00-7:00 PM, and KBCS 91.3 FM, Noon-3:00 PM

A team of people has volunteered to plan a 1090 Listener Rally. We will hear more soon!

The development of our website is progressing. We’ll let you know when it’s accessible.
Our team is working with Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata to arrange a meeting with Al Gore . We want to talk with him about the future of progressive radio in Seattle and other cities in the country. We have also arranged a meeting with an “insider” at the former KTPK 1090AM.
We apologize if we have not gotten back to you if you have offered to help. We have been collecting contact information and want to be sure we use our volunteers wisely and effectively.
We now have a website under construction thanks to a qualified volunteer who came forward.

We are confident that we’re either going to see an existing radio station pick up progressive radio in Seattle or possibly create a listener-owned station. There is a model of a successful community-owned commercial progressive radio station in Minneapolis that we are following up on.
We want to assure you that we are working to bring progressive radio back to Seattle. We’ll be in touch with next steps – as well as other opportunities to put this community into action for our progressive priorities.
