- Estimated Budgetary Impact of Bills to Prevent the Scheduled Increase in Interest Rates on New Federal Student Loans Under current law, starting on July 1, the interest rate on new subsidized student loans will rise from the 3.4 percent in effect this year to 6.8 percent. Agricultural Reconciliation Act of 2012

The Agricultural Reconciliation Act of 2012 would make several changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and extend its authorization for one year. CBO estimates that enacting this legislation would reduce direct spending by $5.6 billion in 2013 and by $33.7 billion over the 2013-2022 period, relative to CBO’s March 2012 baseline projections. Those estimates are based on CBO’s assumption that the legislation will be enacted on or near October 1, 2012.

Under current law, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) assigns federal officers and analysts to work at state and local “fusion centers,” which are hubs for gathering and sharing information about potential threats to public safety. H.R. 3140 would direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to make it a priority to assign federal staff to fusion centers in high-risk areas with mass transit systems.
