HR7- We Marched and Now We Take Action: Tell Congress to Reject H.R. 7

This weekend, millions of people all over the United States marched to defend women’s rights.

Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on legislation that would restrict health insurance coverage of abortion for nearly all women in this country. H.R.7 would effectively reverse the progress made by women and their families and would be especially burdensome for women of color and low-income women.

This is yet another attempt at making abortion inaccessible and denying women’s reproductive rights.

Currently, women enrolled in Medicaid are denied access to abortion coverage unless they fall under special cases. Federal employees and their dependents, Peace Corps volunteers, Native American women, and women in federal prisons and immigration detention centers all face similar restrictions as well.

H.R. 7 would make these restrictions permanent.

Studies show that when a woman is denied access to an abortion, she is three times as likely to fall into poverty than one who is able to access an abortion. Lower income women and women of color specifically experience a higher rate of harmful health conditions. Thus, denying abortion access will only exacerbate their health disparities.

Make your voice heard before 3:00 p.m. ET. Call your representative now at (202) 224-3121. Ask him/her to support abortion coverage and vote “No” on H.R. 7.

The control over women’s bodies and lives afforded to legislators in passing H.R. 7 is unacceptable. It is time for Congress to prioritize women’s autonomy, reproductive justice, and comprehensive health care coverage at the margins.
