FDR had something to say about voting

votingFranklin D. Roosevelt once said

“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.”

a sport not many focus on … Golf & Women of Colour – reminder

Wethepeople

So, I’m flipping through my newest 2015 Essence from back to front because of the horoscope section and as I’m looking I see a section called “trending topics” reporting that the USTA just appointed former tennis player Katrina Adams, President, CEO and chairman of the board and the first African American to fill the role. So, more things have changed in the World of Sports in which women of colour historically have not dominated.  While flipping through my 2014 issue of Essence with various fashions it was became obvious that this is not just about fashion, though the title gave me that impression and had to share given the history. In fact, it is about a Woman named Renee Powell and some young Women who were introduced to her and who have chosen her as their mentor. Now, the surprise to most would be that these brightly fashionable women are people of colour and that the article is about golf or as they say, “One of America’s favourite pastimes.”  In fact my family lived just a few blocks away from a golf course and while golf wasn’t my choice the history of golf was well known in our house, including a couple of good along with the bad and the really ugly stories of racism. It is a sad day to know that the practice is still alive and well, though tiger woods did shatter the glass ceiling some. The art of discrimination is subtle these days, while the stories of’ the good ‘olé boys club were worse, golf is a work in progress. The article tells us about the ups and downs of Powell’s life and daily experiences as a young girl to becoming one of four African-American women qualifying for golf’s top pro-circuit … The LPGA Tour that included Althea Gibson, LaRee Pearl Sugg, Shasta Avery Hardt and Renee Powell. Their legacy on the links is gone into in depth. They list the youngest pro at 17, four others including the niece of tiger woods who also has a great story, but what is even more exciting is that after Powell retired she now owns her own golf club, is the golf pro. She also teaches and mentors a new generation of girls/women of colour who love the game and are willing to take it as far as they can. Golfing is not cheap, so, if you have an opportunity to donate to your area’s youth sports club or make time to teach train and expose kids of colour to golf … do it!

Oh and the article on Golf is in Essence and was written by Connie Aitcheson

Republicans … say one thing in front of cameras and continue to do another on the floor of Congress

demsVrepub

just another rant …

The 113th Congress is long gone, but it should be noted there were fewer days “in session”  than the people they seem to keep saying don’t depend on the government for “entitlements” then voting against them…some Republicans call “them” lazy though some of those are constituents; the nonsense continued with the 114th Congress and now here we are with the 115th Congress.  We are being governed by a guy with no political experience; seemingly no sense of real loyalty to what most of us call #AmericanValues, doesn’t seem to be a true republican or a person who leans left, he has said a lot, done little though the executive orders he once hated when President Obama was in office are coming at #WeThePeople hard and will be doing some damage in the near future. This trifecta, aka our government, is now capable of  slashing, burning, cutting or leaving good legislation for the people out and holding secret meetings making deals lest we understand or accept that talk is not only cheap … it is being manipulated and so is the truth, oh wait … all this ish is already going on and we are only a couple of months into this and what most of us know as the truth has officially become known as  “alternative facts”  … sigh

It should make Americans all wonder if $175K for members of Congress is just too much for less than 120 days of work?

Yes, breathe in slowly then slowly release your breath … be still, then repeat the process when needed as insanity in the News, and Politics begins to try and make viewers accept trump in “alternative facts”  on loop mode.  The idea that Americans should just trust someone in the highest office or a member of Congress on face value is a joke but when you catch their work of “performance art” you see they not only believe what they are saying but assume that no one is paying attention to their behavior on the floor or Congress because they certainly act like it every time they get a chance to be on cable TV.

Congress, led by republicans continue to say one thing while planning take downs in secret rooms and have tossed their title of Public Servant down the nearest sewer.  I wonder how we will ever pass VRA, immigration reform and other bills For Americans when a good faith effort is kept off the floor of Congress because of those added poison pill amendments.  Again, how childish and how tough is it to understand the Republican Party needs to be more inclusive, though trust, respect and future votes are not seasonal or easily earned nor should they be. It makes a voter wonder, can Republicans stop flip-flopping for just a minute so Congress can get the People’s business done and the tantrums continue. Okay, stop and take a deep breath as we watch all of the talking points…  disguised as debates, votes and amendments begin on the floor of Congress.

If you listen to Republicans, they act; remember (act) like they plan to be in bipartisan mode but they have shown themselves to be less than trustworthy less than bipartisan and their votes … proof of how they actually feel cannot be denied or overlooked.

Yes, Congress has taken the time to bring issues they want to vote on without much debate. It is important to call your member of Congress because the Republican tactic to stall or quietly throw poison pills in amendments is happening right this very moment. I ask you to please call your member of Congress and tell them to pass a Climate Change bill, respect reproductive rights, VRA, immigration reform and pass #theAmericansJOBsACT, as all Americans need a path toward Stability not Austerity, which is what Republicans seem to keep pushing.

I want America to wake up, push back, and demand all members of Congress do the People’s business

#MidtermsMatter

Republicans see themselves as stewards of the purse strings in the House of Representatives and they are right now, but it does not give them the right to toss #WeThePeople under the bus, who as taxpayers give them a salary and great government health care out to fend for ourselves.

#Midterms will decide what kind of life we all want our next generation to navigate through … please take the time to understand who is causing America to decline  … The House holds the American #PurseStrings which is why the #FlintRescueAid, Infrastructure, Budget among a large list have been held hostage

Arrested for fighting slavery? 35.8 million people are trapped in modern slavery around the world

WALK FREE.ORG Modern slavery couldn’t be closer to home for Biram Dah Abeid. The twelfth of thirteen children born to an enslaved mother, Biram was released from a life of servitude while still in the womb.1 His release was the dying act of his mother’s master in Mauritania, a country where the children of slaves become the property of their owners.

Biram grew up a member of the Haratina, the class of people known to be the descendants of slaves, many of whom remain trapped in situations of slavery and exploitation by Mauritania’s slave-owning elites. Biram and others have made it their life’s mission to end this abuse in Mauritania.2

However they face regular harassment and harsh treatment in this fight for freedom. As you read this Biram and his fellow activists are sitting in a prison cell for their work to end slavery in Mauritania — and we need your help to secure justice

Call on the Mauritanian government to free Biram Dah Abeid and his fellow anti-slavery activists.

The 2014 Global Slavery Index revealed that   — and Mauritania is one of the worst offenders, with the highest prevalence of modern slavery in the world.3That’s why the work of anti-slavery activists such as Biram is so important; but instead of addressing the root causes of slavery, the Mauritanian government is working to intimidate those that speak out

Sources close to the activists have made serious allegations that some of the group have been tortured, including being stripped, beaten and trampled by police since their arrest last year.

The activists were arrested during a peaceful anti-slavery protest and were convicted in January for inciting hatred under Mauritania’s terrorism laws.

A huge wave of international pressure now could force the Mauritanian government to prioritize ending slavery and stop the harassment of anti-slavery activists.

Send a message to Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, calling on him to release these activists and get serious about tackling modern slavery.

It has now been weeks since Biram and his fellow activists’ imprisonment: let’s not wait any longer to get them out of prison and back to fighting against slavery.

In hope,

Victoria, Mika, Jayde, Joanna and the Walk Free team
